“Living
in America: Voices and Visions”
Pat
Mora
Reading Monday, March 3, 2003
Award-winning author of poetry, nonfiction, and children’s books, Pat Mora promotes connecting communities through literature and literacy. A native of El Paso, the border city to which her grandparents came during the Mexican Revolution, she has published five volumes of poetry, a memoir, a collection of essays, and over twenty books for young readers. She is active in having April 30th celebrated as Dia de los ninos/Dia de los libros, a celebration of children, books, languages, and cultures.
The Washington Post described her acclaimed memoir House of Houses as “a textual feast . . . a regenerative act . . . and an eloquent bearer of the old truth that it is through the senses that we apprehend love.” She has been a recipient of poetry fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Kellogg National Leadership Fellowships. Among her other awards are the Ohioana Award, the Pellicer-Frost ’99 Bi-national Poetry Award, four Southwest Book Awards, and the Premio Aztlan Literature Award. Her most recent poetry collection is Aunt Carmen’s Book of Practical Saints. She has served as a consultant on U.S.-Mexico youth exchanges, a museum director, a university administrator, and an English teacher. The mother of three grown children, she divides her time between Santa Fe, NM and the Northern KY/Cincinnati area.
