English 122-970: College Composition (purchase at the Book Stop, 931 16th St.)
Online:
This is an online composition course which will require the following: (1) self-
discipline, (2) knowledge of basic e-mail technology, (3) access to a computer
connected to the Internet, and (4) frequent communication with the
instructor.
Essays:
There will be seven 700-word essays required in this course. The essays may
be sent to the instructor as a Word attachment, sent by fax (356-8345), or placed
in the instructor's doorbox at Michener L-42. The essays are due no later
than 5:00 PM on the dates specified in the syllabus. Late essays will be counted
down one full grade for each day they are late. Before composing your essay,
be sure to read "Writing the Essay."
Exercises:
During the fifteen-week course, there will be weekly grammar and punctuation
exercises from the course text. You must complete these exercises by writing
out the entire sentences, making the corrections, and then sending them to me
by private e-mail. My e-mail address is LBVARNE@BENTLEY.UNCO.EDU.
(If the Bentley server is down, then send them to my
alternate e-mail address LBVARNE@IBM.NET.)
Listserv:
Much of the instruction will take place over the class listserv.
You must check your e-mail at least every other day.
You must also participate in the discussions
about writing; this listserv will be the major forum for the class.
To get on to the listserv, send an e-mail message to LISTSERV@IS.UNCO.EDU.
In the body of your message (not the subject line), type SUBSCRIBE COMP122.
You will immediately receive a confirmation of your subscription
if you have done this correctly.
Plagiarism:
Plagiarism is the act of taking someone else's writing and passing it off as your
own. Do not even consider plagiarizing in this course. If you are discovered
plagiarizing any writing assignment (and this includes having someone else
write or heavily edit the essay), you will receive a failing grade for the entire
course and will be put on academic probation.
Course Grade:
Your course grade will be the average derived from the following activities:
(1) Seven 700-word essays (70%), (2) Workbook exercises (15%), and (3) Listserv
participation (15%). A grade of "incomplete" will not be given except under the
most extraordinary circumstances.
