Additional Information for English Education Majors

Other Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. I’m an English/Teaching major under the 1997 Catalog. Do I need a minor?

A. According to that edition (and earlier editions) of the Catalog, English/Teaching majors did need a minor. However, the 1998 edition and later editions of the Catalog do not require a minor for English/Teaching majors; we decided this as a matter of policy because we feel that Teaching majors already have enough requirements—English, Education, and General Education.

So we agreed to waive the minor requirement for students still under the older editions of the Catalog that require the minor. If the principle that now holds—that English/Teaching majors do not need a minor—makes sense, then it makes sense for students who are under prior editions of the Catalog. However, MAKE SURE YOUR ADVISOR WRITES A LETTER TO THE REGISTRATION CENTER WAIVING YOUR MINOR REQUIREMENT.

Q. I’m a secondary English major trying to plan out my next few semesters. Do I need to take both of my methods courses (EED 402 and 3/541) during the same semester that I’m enrolled in STEP 363?

A. No, you only need to be enrolled in one of the methods courses concurrently with STEP 363. In fact, it’s to your advantage to take one methods course before then, so that you can apply those methods in the 5 lessons you’ll be required to teach for 363. Try to take the first methods course during or after enrollment in STEP 262 but before 363.

Q. I’m an English Education [secondary, middle school, or elementary] major, but I want to change to English Liberal Arts. What do I do?

A. Go the English office and fill out a change of major form, indicating a change from English, Secondary [or other] Ed, to English, Liberal Arts.

Q. Do I need to notify the people in Education?

A. No. That's all there is to it—no other paperwork, no one else to notify.

Q. And when I pick up the liberal-arts emphasis, do I have to declare a minor?

A. Yes, the Liberal Arts emphasis does require a minor.

Q. Does anything else change with the change from English Ed to English Liberal Arts?

A. Maybe. The change is considered a change of major, so you must go into the English Liberal Arts program in the Catalog in effect at the time the change is made. If this means that you are changing from one edition of the Catalog to another, you should be aware that the program could have changed from the one described in the edition that was in effect when you declared your earlier English Ed major, and that the requirements for the minor you’ve declared could also have changed.
