Sample Four Year Program for Liberal Arts English Majors
The Liberal Arts English major is designed for those who wish to major in English but do not wish to teach in the public schools. This is a good pre-professional major and the major for those who wish to pursue graduate studies in English.
The following schedule includes all prescribed and recommended general education. General education categories (e. g., 4d) are shown in parentheses following the course that satisfies the requirement in that category.
Courses listed below, whether in the major or in the general education program, which are followed by an asterisk (*) are chosen from a list of options. For the complete list of possibilities that satisfy that particular requirement, consult the full program description in the UNC Catalog, 2000-2001, pp. 68-69 for the major, pp. 19-22 for general education.
There are a few prerequisites in the program that must be honored. You must take ENG 122, for example, before ENG 225. Prerequisites are indicated in course descriptions in the UNC Catalog.
Within reason, other courses may be take in different semesters or even different years than shown in this sample. But you should select courses in an orderly way (with most lower level courses in the first two years and most upper level in the last two).
The Liberal Arts program in English requires a minor. Rather than outline a specific minor, the schedule below indicates eighteen semester hours, the usual requirement for a minor, with each course shown in boldface as minor [3 hr].
The Liberal Arts program allows for a large number of purely elective courses in accumulating the total 120 semester hours required for graduation. These courses may, but do not have to, include additional coursework in the major or minor fields. In the schedule below, these are distributed through the last three years and identified simply as Elective, assuming each is a 3 semester hour course.
