Course Description:
This course is designed to improve reading, thinking, and writing skills. Coursework consists of numerous activities that lead to the completion of assigned papers. Each activity conveys a sense of how the writing process assists in the developing and the communicating of thought, and the final papers verify the students' ability to produce and sustain ideas in formal, documented prose.
Course Requirements:
The course requires 5 final papers of no less than 1200 words each. Cousework consists of three types of activities: journal, groupwork, and final submissions. Journal activities will be submitted to the instructor via e-mail (egolson@mail.unco.edu) on specified due dates. Groupwork and individual responses to the groupwork will be posted to the group via e-mail lists by specified dates. Unless otherwise notified, hardcopies of final papers must be delivered or postmarked to instructor's English department mailbox (Michener L50) by specified dates. Students are invited to revise and submit their essays for reevaluation at any time during the term. All essays will be returned to students within one week of delivery.
Additional Requirements:
In addition to completing required assignments, individual students may be asked to work in a grammar handbook or make an appointment with an online tutor at the University Writing Center.
Grading:
Journal submissions count as 15% of the grade. Groupwork counts as 15% of the grade. Final submissions count as 70% of the grade. Rubrics for journals, groupwork, and final submissions are posted on the website. Students may revise and resubmit graded essays at any time during the term. Additional grammar assignments will count as extra credit.
Plagiarism:
Students are expected to do their own work. Any student submitting the work of a professional or another student will automatically fail the course.
Note:
