Brian’s research interests:
I remain interested in mathematics education at the tertiary level, but especially in the education of future secondary teachers. There is so much that can be done to improve our teaching of mathematics, but our secondary teachers seem to be carrying on the institutional inertia of wherever they teach; I’d like to find ways to counter that. I am also interested in why tertiary mathematics students have so much trouble writing and understanding mathematical proofs: there’s room for more research in that area, too. Finally, there is a relatively new intersection of Mathematics and Psychology – non-linear dynamics. I hope to learn more about that in the next year or two, and perhaps pursue research in that direction, as well.
What Brian currently does for work and research:
I currently teach mathematics at AIMS-Loveland, and am a GA for Dr. Marilyn Welsh working on a study of the “Brain-Wise” program in urban schools.
What Brian does for fun as a graduate student:
For fun, I read (no, really!), run (5K, 10K, who knows what’s next…), play golf (or perhaps, “play at” golf), and, well, that’s about all that fits into my schedule at this time. I also follow a training program that includes resistance training for running, so you’ll find me in the Student Rec Center M-R of most weeks. I used to free-climb (bouldering, mostly), but haven’t found the time or the partner over here.
What else does Brian want us to know about him?
I love teaching college students. I have had a bit more than three year’s experience doing that, and I continue to find it fascinating and (most of the time) a great deal of fun. I’ve also recently gotten back into computer programming (for fun, this time!), and am enjoying the progress that’s been made in that area since I did my last professional programming in 2006.
