UNC Parking Decal Purchase Procedure

All UNC faculty, staff, and students are required to purchase a UNC decal if they park in campus parking lots. Decals for individuals with disabilities are available for purchase at Disability Support Services.

The "Disabled Student--DS" permit allows the driver to park in any handicapped space in all faculty/staff or student lots on campus.  There will be no parking allowed in any "service vehicle" only  or "loading zone" spaces at any time.

Holders of this permit are required to observe all rules and regulations established by the Department of Parking Services.

To purchase a UNC "DS" permit, the following conditions must be met:

  • Documentation of a permanent or temporary disability must be on file at DSS. Physical disabilities and systemic illnesses are considered to be in the medical domain and require the expertise of a physician, neurologist, or other medical specialist with experience and expertise in the area for which accommodations are being requested. The documentation must state the limitations caused by the disability.
  • A state handicap permit is not sufficient in itself.
  • The DSS staff verifies the disability and the need for the parking accommodation. The verification is based on the documentation provided, the limitations stated, and an interview with the individual requesting the parking permit. The type of permit is determined on a case-by-case basis and is a collaborative decision.
