REQUIRED Competencies

  • 2 years of ASL as a foreign language in high school or
  •  ASL 1-4 on a college transcript and/or
  • Life experience
  • A Deaf culture course may also be helpful depending on how ASL competencies are acquired.

NOTE: If ASL 1-4 are successfully completed at an accredited institution of higher education, 6 semester hours may be used to
satisfy UNC liberal arts core requirements.

STEPS TO APPLYING
Apply for UNC Admission

  • You will be classified as an entering freshman if you have less than 13 college credits being transferred in at the time of application submission.
  • If you have 13+ college credits, from another Institution of higher education you will be classified as a transfer student.
  • As part of the UNC application transfer students will need to send official transcripts from all institutions of higher education that you have attended.  The admissions office will review your transcripts and send you a transcript review evaluation of the liberal arts core courses that will transfer into the UNC system.
  • Transfer coursework related to ASL, deafness and/or interpreting is reviewed with the ASLEI application.

Recommendation

A recommendation from an ASL instructor, interpreting instructor, mentor, interpreting colleague, or a member of the Deaf community must be submitted as part of your application. To complete this step you must forward the link below to someone who is able to speak to your ASL language competency, your abilities to work as an ASL-English interpreter, and/or your academic abilities. This recommendation must be submitted no later than the application deadline date.

ASL Demonstration of Competency Screening

All applicants who do not hold national interpreting credentials (RID and/or EIPA 4.0+ and EIPA written test)are required to complete the ASL Demonstration of Competency Screening.  The purpose of the UNC-DO IT Center ASL Demonstration of Competency is to determine your language readiness for admission and placement in the ASL-English Interpretation baccalaureate program. The program entry requirement is demonstrated ASL proficiency at a conversational level commensurate with four semesters of instruction in American Sign Language. There are three components to the screening:

There is a charge of $150.00 for this screening. The screenings are offered at specific times during the year (see important date chart).  ASLEI applications will not be reviewed until the screening is complete. 

NOTE:
If you are a nationally credentialed interpreter (RID or EIPA 4.0+ and EIPA written test) the ASL Demonstration of Competency will be waived. Verification of all identified credentials need to be scanned and emailed to: susan.brown@unco.edu no later than the application deadline date.

ASLEI APPLICATION DEADLINES and IMPORTANT DATES


The ASLEI BA program has three entry points; each beginning different semesters. 
When a student begins the program depends on several factors however, ASL competency is a primary factor. 
The chart below provides you a guide on the steps to applying, depending on where you think your ASL competency may be.

Semester Start


To be considered to begin the ASLEI program Fall Semester 
you must have a minimum of
ASL language competency ready to begin ASL V or above


To be considered to begin the ASLEI program Spring Semester
you must have a minimum of ASL language competency ready to begin ASL VI or above.


To be considered to begin the ASLEI program Summer Semester you must have a minimum of ASL language competency ready to    
begin ASL VIII or above.

ASL Demonstration of Competency Screening

Acceptance


Once all application materials have been submitted the ASLEI program will review your application packet. 

Letters of acceptance will be sent out at the end of July.

New Student Advising

 


Once you have been accepted into the ASLEI program you will be required to complete an advising session with the Director of the ASLEI program to discuss your academic plan.  This advising will take place in August. You will receive further instructions on how to sign up for an advising session.

Orientation Class
($100 charge)


An online (2 week) new student orientation class is also a requirement of acceptance. 

For students beginning the program in the fall semester the new student orientation class will be conducted in August. You will receive further instruction on how to register for the orientation along with your letter of recommendation.
