ASL- English Interpretation Program

Congratulations to our 2011 Honor Student Jo Brown!

Congratulations to ASLEI student, Jo Brown, for being recognized for academic excellence at the UNC 2011College of Education and Behavioral Sciences Honors Convocation.

Jo was recognized by UND-DO IT Center instructional staff to be among the top students in the ASLEI program; recognized for academic standing as well as leadership among peers in courses and/or within spheres of influence outside the academic environment.  Fifty-one (51) CEBS students were recognized at the 2011 Honors Convocation.

Jo’s accomplishment is a testimony to her dedicated efforts toward providing quality interpreter services for individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Dr. Leilani Johnson, Director of the UNC-DO IT Center commented at the 2011 Honors Convocation:

"Jo is a student in good academic standing who has distinguished herself in the ASL-English Interpretation program.  Jo came back to school to achieve her goal of becoming a better interpreter for the K-12 students she serves.   Her openness to learn is her hallmark.  She was willing to step back in order to move forward and she has done so with an enviable spirit.  Her calm resolve made her an example for students and staff alike.  She initiated opportunities to share her experiences as an encouragement to new students, and the staff has expressed positive comments about being a part of her academic journey.  Jo has continued her work as an educational interpreter in Louisiana throughout her program of study, and she has created occasions – one-on-one to the state department of education – to advocate for requisite preparation of highly qualified educational interpreters.  Her education is making a difference.  The ASL-English Interpretation program is proud to nominate Jo Brown as one of two 2011 honor students."

Honor Student Jo Brown

"With top notch instructors and administrative and peer support, the ASL/English Interpreting BA program has empowered me with the confidence needed to handle any interpreting situation. By pushing my intellectual boundaries, the program compelled me to strive for a higher degree of excellence than I ever thought was possible. In doing so, it fostered within me both academic and personal growth. The education I have received through the UNC - DOIT center has been invaluable!"
