Applying to the Baccalaureate Degree in ASL-English Interpretation

If you are interested in applying to the undergraduate degree in ASL-English Interpretation, you will need to know the following information:

Prerequisites to Apply

A demonstration of ASL competency is required before students begin the coursework in the major.
For example, a student who has 2 years of ASL as a foreign language in high school, 2 years (4 classes) ASL on a college transcript, or life experience are required in order for an applicant to be able to move into the courses of the ASL-English Interpretation major. All applicants who do not have national certification (RID certification and/or EIPA 4.0+) will be required to demonstrate current ASL proficiencies before acceptance and placement in the program. For candidates who are nationally certified a copy of certification credentials must be included in your application packet.

Technology Requirements

Since this program is delivered primarily online, in order to successfully complete the program you need to have the following:

  1. Windows 2000 or higher operating system
  2. Microsoft Office Suite (2000 or higher)
  3. Internet access with highest speed possible
  4. An email account and address
  5. Access to a TV, DVD player and DVD digital camcorder
  6. Commitment and dedication to be a successful distance learner

You will be taking a minimum of 6 semester hours of coursework in the major during semesters, and you will be required to participate in a 4-week onsite session in Greeley, CO during each of the three summers.

Program Costs

As a national distance-learning program, a deferential tuition fee has been established. This means students pay the same tuition whether they are across the street or across the country. This fee is reviewed annually by the Colorado Commission on Higher Education. For the 2008-2009 academic year, the tuition was $250 per credit hour for both instate and out-of-state students. It will be adjusted annually each year.

Instructional materials will vary by course, but will average approximately $150 per course over the life of the program.

UNC has Residence Halls available for the summer sessions. The 2-bedroom units allow cost-sharing with peers in the program.

UNC's home campus in Greeley, CO can be reached by several major highways, or Denver International Airport is about an hour away. Once you are on campus, everything is within a relatively close proximity; a vehicle is a luxury rather than a necessity.
