The UNC-DO IT Center proposed several initiatives and partnered projects for this 5-year MARIE grant cycle.  These include:

  1. Establishing an Institute for Legal Interpreting (ILI);
  2. Hosting an annual MARIE-based Deaf Mentor Training and ASL Immersion event;
  3. Replicating the 2010 national Deaf Advocacy Training in the MARIE states;
  4. Creating and delivering a skills development series – the I-GO Series!;
  5. Collaborating on the development and implementation of a vocational rehabilitation (VR) interpreting strand;
  6. Providing technical assistance to the interpreter education community;
  7. Annotating and consolidating lending library materials and processes; and,
  8. Supporting the region through improved communication and RID-sponsored Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

What's more, MARIE stands prepared to support and collaborate with other NCIEC members on an agreed upon strategic plan with a comprehensive and cohesive plan of action. There are a number of activities going on “behind the scenes” as we ramp up the MARIE work.

Here’s a sneak peek:  Anna Witter-Merithew will be overseeing the MARIE activities and a new MARIE Coordinator will be hired the first of the year.  In addition a new MARIE website will be constructed and made available in the near future.

Stay tuned as the various activities are developed and made public!
