Team UNC Catering is "Cruisin' For A Cure"
"Team UNC Catering" Raises Money for the American Cancer Society’s 2009 Relay for Life event
For the third year in a row, a group of employees from UNC Dining Services formed “Team UNC Catering” to participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. This year, the event was held on June 5th & 6th at Greeley’s Island Grove Regional Park.
Team UNC Catering raised over $9,100 to support the cure for cancer and was recognized as a Platinum All-Star Team, ranking 3rd out of 169 teams. (This was noted as an outstanding performance by the Executive Committee as never has such a “new” team raised so much money!) UNC Catering was also recognized as a Silver Sponsor of the event for assisting with the Survivor’s Oasis as well as one of the Captain’s Parties. The team, led by Deena McBain, was featured on the front page of the Greeley Tribune on the day of the event (read the article here).
During the overnight event, over 40 people came out to support the team and participate in the walk. Even the thunderstorm didn't keep Team UNC Catering from walking through the night!
The theme for this year's Relay For Life was "Cruisin' For A Cure." Feeling a bit nostalgic, Team UNC Catering chose to follow a "Gilligan's Island" theme and had some team members dress accordingly to walk the first lap.
Relay For Life is one of Weld County’s largest events, second only to the Greeley Stampede. It is considered the American Cancer Society’s signature event that brings together more than 3.5 million people across the country each year to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against a disease that takes too much. The Society works hard every day to prevent cancer and save lives by supporting groundbreaking research, affecting public policies that protect us from cancer, and educating people on how to prevent or detect cancer early. This year, over 2,500 people participated in Weld Relay for Life on 169 teams, ultimately raising over $340,000.
