Dining Services CARES!!
Environmental Concerns
What does UNC Dining Services do for the environment? We take pride in the fact that we strive to take better care of our environment each and every day!! We do a lot of different things to accomlish that task, but here is a sample of a few of the things we’re doing!
- Holmes Dining Hall is just finished participating in a pilot program for composting here at UNC... everything went well!
- Both Gourmet To Go locations currently use Oxo-Biodegradable™ Bags. "By offering this bag UNC Dining Services is helping to lessen the impact of waste for a healthier environment. The plastic used in this bag will convert to water, carbon dioxide and biomass in the presence of soil, moisture and oxygen. Like a fallen leaf, it will disappear over time."
- Our “Bear On The Run” program has always used biodegradable to-go containers, but we’ve also added biodegradable cups!
- The University Center Food Court now uses utensils made of 70% renewable resources.
- Dining Services participates in UNC's recycling program. We recycle cardboard from the dining rooms and paper/plastics/cans from the offices.
- All of our dining rooms turn off lights between meals in the dining rooms to help do our part in conserving energy.
- We have a company who picks up our used fryer oil and recycles it. Currently it's used with feed for livestock, but very soon it will be recycled for biodiesel fuels!
- Not only do "We Feed The Bears!" but we also feed the BATS! Holmes Dining Hall donates leftover and over-ripe fruit to the research bats in Ross Hall!
- Starbucks® and Taco Bell® Express napkins are made from recycled products.
