New ideas and a commitment to making a difference is what you’ll get when you sit down with Associate Director of Development Alex Stern. Alex joined the team as a gift officer in 2015 and currently also serves as acting Director of Annual Giving, two roles that allow him to interact with donors from across UNC’s diverse alumni base.
Alex began his fundraising career with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, an opportunity that taught him the power of community in philanthropy. Alex applies that lesson in his current role directing leadership annual giving, and in bringing new ideas to the management and growth of UNC’s annual giving and stewardship programs. The Team UNC employee giving program, monthly sustaining donor program, Bear Tuesday day of giving and UNC’s Appreciation Week have all grown the base of UNC’s support due to Alex’s belief that a community of donors can make a difference. That support translates into opportunities for UNC students and faculty.
Alex knows that when he brings donors together, provides a meaningful philanthropic opportunity and sincere stewardship, regardless of the gift amount, remarkable things can happen; he helps alumni and friends experience this every day. But if you were not already sold on Alex’s commitment to the UNC community, ask him to show you his socks – blue and gold happen to be his favorite colors.
My favorite spot on campus is the bottom level of the University Center. The energy of students, and faculty and staff, from all programs on campus crossing paths is palpable and invigorating. I appreciate the close connections that the size and layout of UNC’s beautiful campus offers, and it’s great to see reunions of friends and new connections made while intersecting through the UC. The human connections – it’s what makes UNC special!
