Weather Conditions and the Ceremonies

Spring Graduate Ceremony

In the spring, UNC’s graduate commencement ceremony (for those students obtaining their Masters, Specialist or Doctoral degrees) on Friday is held indoors in the Butler Hancock Athletic Center in the Bank of Colorado Arena, at 7:00 p.m. on the UNC campus.

There are no additional inclement weather plans for these ceremonies.

Note: Ceremony will be broadcast live through Eversport, the streaming link is available on the Commencement home page.

Spring Undergraduate Ceremony

On Saturday, UNC hosts one undergraduate ceremony outdoors at Nottingham Field beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Northern Colorado’s weather in May can be unpredictable. This includes the possibility of cooler/cold temperatures, snow and conditions that are uncomfortable, but are not a safety risk. If weather conditions outdoors were to worsen, this may result in a shortened outdoor ceremony. When weather is questionable we encourage both students and guests to check for announcements. Please dress and plan accordingly for an outdoor ceremony, wear or bring sun screen and/or a hat.

Visit our weather forecast page.

Spring Undergraduate Ceremony - Inclement Weather

1) If prior to or during the outdoor ceremony there is light snow, wind, light rain, drizzle or other weather that is uncomfortable; an adjusted and shortened undergraduate ceremony will occur outdoors on Nottingham Field.  2) If during the outdoor ceremony the weather intensifies (e.g. high wind, lightening or tornado warnings) and puts attendees/guests at risk there would be an adjusted and shortened undergraduate ceremony on Nottingham Field.

In the case of extreme  weather (see the list below) the outdoor ceremony will be moved indoors to the Bank of Colorado Arena in the Butler Hancock Athletic Center. This decision will be announced by 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday (three days prior) to the ceremony and will not be reversed.  If the university makes this announcement, communication will be made through the UNC home page, Commencement home page, In and Around Campus, UNC Today, UNC Snowline (970-351-4100), Twitter, Facebook, email messages to students, and the Greeley Tribune.

NOTE: If an inclement weather announcement is made it will change the start time  of all  graduation ceremonies for all colleges. There will be no exceptions will be made for a student to attend a ceremony other than the one for college they will be receiving their diploma from (see college order below).  Students will report to the Recreation Center 1-hour prior to the ceremony for robing, line-up and processional.

Weather elements UNC considers to be Extreme

The University of Northern Colorado’s spring extreme weather decisions are influenced by the following factors:

Lightning

Snow greater than 3 inches
Tornado
Prolonged daily snow or rain that compromises Nottingham Field
