About the Summit
In March of 2003, University President Kay Norton addressed a forum on the future of the cultural centers and allied programs at UNC. Wishing to keep these issues in front of the University community, Professor Hermon George Jr., the moderator and participant in the forum, announced the intention to hold the first annual Summit on Social Justice and Diversity in the Spring of 2004. He also announced that a report card on social justice and diversity at UNC would be presented at the event.
Starting in 2004, the Summit has been held on the first Thursday of every April, or as close to this date as the availability of facilities will allow. The Report Card on Social Justice and Diversity at UNC has also been issued as a centerpiece of each Summit. A poster contest/art exhibit on the theme of social justice and diversity has been held since 2005.
