31 March, 2007 (5:30a.m. - 4:00p.m.) - Club Climb We will be heading to Boulder Canyon for this climb. Chances are that a lot of the ice has melted out, so if Boulder Canyon doesn't work, then we will go to Hidden Falls. 17 March, 2007 (5:30a.m. - 4:00p.m.) - Club Climb Location is still being decided, but we will most likely go to the Big Thompson Canyon, and climbing an un-named flow. I haven't been to this one yet, but it looks like a really short approach, and probably a 50ft. WI3-4. In other words, a great climb to join. However, it is a pretty thin flow, so only one person can climb at a time. 24 February, 2007 (6:30a.m. - 4:00p.m.) - Club Climb We will be teaming up with the Outdoor Adventure Club for this climb, and we will head off to Hidden Falls again. This climb has a 1.5 mile approach, and two excellent climbs. One is about 90ft. tall and a WI4, the other is about 25ft and a WI2-3. We will be leaving from the UC South Parking lot no later than 6:30p.m. If you have any questions, please notify John at iceclimbing@unco.edu 10 February, 2007 (5:30a.m. - 5:00p.m.) - Club Climb We will be going to Loch Vale for this club climb. Loch Vale is located in Rocky Mountain National Park. It has about a three mile approach which ends with a great 70ft WI 4 or a 20ft WI 5. This is a great climb, but beware of the approach because it is easy to start sweating. Bring extra clothes to change into, or bring wicking layers 9 February, 2007 (anytime) - T-shirt orders and fees due All orders for the UNC ICC 2007 sweatshirt/t-shirt/long sleeve-t are due today along with your form of payment. Please make checks payable to Fowler High School, or give cash to Clair Lundy, please don't pay with a credit card as we don't have a card reader. You may email your order to iceclimbing@unco.edu and come to the February 9 climb. 3 February, 2007 (5:00a.m.-4:00p.m.) – Club Climb We will be going to Hidden Falls for this climb. Hidden falls is located just south of Longs Peak. The approach is about 1.5 miles and it has a very reasonable grade. Hidden falls actually forms two separate flows, one ~25 ft. WI 2-3 and another 90-100 ft. flow that is rated between WI 4 and 5. This is an excellent climb for everyone because of the excellent availability of a hard climb and an easy climb in addition to the reasonable approach. However, this climb is extremely popular so we will leave early in order to claim the ice first. 20 January, 2007 (5:30a.m. – 3:00p.m.) – First Club Climb Our first club climb will take place at the Big Thompson Flow. The Big Thompson Flow is located about twenty miles west of Loveland, just off of Highway 34. The approach is about two-thirds of a mile, straight up. The climb is a great climb for beginners. It is classified as WI-2, and is perfect for learning axe and crampon placement, belaying techniques, and how to lead/set up anchors. As a result of the short approach and easy accessibility, this climb tends to be very popular. For this reason, we will be leaving from the Butler-Hancock parking lot at 5:30a.m. Don’t forget to bring gas money. 18 January, 2007 (5:00 – 6:00p.m.) – Club Meeting This meeting will take place at the University Center’s Aspen A suite. We will be covering basic climbing/hiking information and what to expect/wear/bring for our first climb.
2 November, 2006 (5:30 – 6:30p.m.) – First Club Meeting The meeting will take place at the University Center’s Spruce Suites A and B. We will be covering general club information including: membership requirements, club climbs, necessary equipment/dress, fundraising, etc. The meeting should only take about one hour, and food will be provided. January 28, 2006 (Saturday) First Club Climb Congratulations on a great first climb! I just want to congratulate all of you who were able to come to our first climb on Saturday. All of you did such a great job, and just about everyone has told me of the great time they had. I've updated the pictures page with some pictures from that climb, and I've included a new page called videos' which has some neat videos that I've prepared from our climbs thus far. Anyway, I hope to see many of you for our next climb! Yahoo!
February 11, 2006 (Saturday) Second Club Climb We will return to the Big Thompson flows for our second club climb. For this climb we will be focusing on improving technique and getting comfortable on the ice. This will be a great opportunity for people to practice their skills. Also, for those of you who are interested, I will spend some time going over how to lead and set up anchors. We are planning on meeting at the UC north parking lot at 6:00am, and then leaving no later than 6:15am. If you have any questions, please let me know.
February 18, 2006 (Saturday) Third Club Climb We will be heading to Hidden falls for this climb. This climb is exceptionally harder than the Big Thompson climb. For those of you who are interested, Big Thompson is rated a WI2 and Hidden Falls is rated a WI4. The approach to Hidden falls is about one mile with very little elevation change (Big Thompson approach is about ¼ mile with about 1,500 ft elevation change). However, this is a very popular climb because of its difficulty and its availability. As a result, we can only take 10-15 so please let me know if you would like to come on this climb. Keep in mind that the next climb will also go to Hidden falls, so if this day doesn't work out for you, try for the next climb. We will be leaving the UC north parking lot at 5:30, so please be prepared and ready to go by that time. This is a difficult climb, but it is one that I think all of you are capable of completing, so seriously consider coming on this climb. If you have any questions, please let me know.
February 25, 2006 (Saturday) Fourth Club Climb We will return to Hidden falls for our fourth club climb. We would prefer that if you were unable to attend the last climb, you come on this climb. Remember that we can only take about 10-15 so please let me know if you would like to come. This climb is difficult, but it is within reach for all of you. The approach is one mile, with little change in elevation (Big Thompson approach is about ¼ mile with about 1,500 ft elevation change). We will leave the UC north parking lot at 5:30. If you have any questions please let me know.
March 11, 2006 (Saturday) Fifth Club Climb We will take this club to new territory for our fifth climb as we head to Loch Vail gorge. Loch Vail is a perfect destination spot for ice climbers. It has many different falls that are available for climbers; everything from WI3 to WI5 can be climbed, and they are all very close together. The approach is about 2.5 miles with moderate elevation change; it normally takes about an hour and a half to get to the climb. This climb is located in Rocky Mountain National Park . We will leave the UC north parking lot at 5:30am. Be prepared to purchase a park pass for your car (normally $20). However, if we leave on time, we can normally get into the park before they start charging park fees. So, get ready for a long approach, but some really good climbing. Please let me know if you have any questions.
March 25, 2006 (Saturday) Sixth Club Climb We will return to Loch Vail gorge for our sixth club climb. As stated earlier, this is a great climbing area with a lot of availability for all levels of climbers. This will be an excellent time for members to test their anchor placement, leading, and belaying skills. We will leave the UC north parking lot at 5:30am. There is a chance that we will need to purchase park passes when we enter Rocky Mountain National Park . Again, let me know if you have any questions.
April 8, 2006 (Saturday) Final Club Climb This will be our last club climb for the season, I know, it's sad. We will return to the Big Thompson flows to finish where we started. However, this climb will take place at night. You read correctly, at night. We will start the evening with a club dinner at John's apartment at 4:00pm, and then depart for the flow by 5:30pm. We will most likely get to the climb when it is beginning to get dark, set up some anchors, and enjoy a night of climbing. If you have a headlamp, this would be an excellent time to bring one. If you don't have a headlamp, please bring a flashlight. Also, it will be much colder than usual because we will be climbing at night, please come prepared. John lives at 1730 19 th Ave. in Greeley , CO , please use www.mapquest.com for driving directions. |
