Sultans, Eunuchs, and Harems: The RIse and Fall of the Ottoman Empire

Students will travel to Istanbul, Turkey where they will experience the sights, sounds, and culture of one of the world’s most historic cities. The program will be based at Bogazici University. Bogazici is located on the Bosporus and is one of Turkey’s most prestigious universities. Students will receive 6 credits for participation in the program. Students will enroll in MIND 292 Sultans, Eunuchs and Harems: The Rise and Fall of the Ottoman Empire. Students will also enroll in MIND 292 Ottoman Monuments, The course will be taught by UNC professor, George Junne, and counts for LAC elective credit. Students will examine some of the social, cultural, and political histories of the Ottoman Empire, from its origins in the 13th century until its end following World War I. Planned field trips and assignments will allow students to gain an in-depth understanding of this large and long-standing empire.

Estimated cost is $5,000 - $5,500 (budget includes tuition, housing, health insurance and estimated costs for food, airfare, and personal experenses)
The program is open to all students. 10-15 spaces are available. Acceptance will be made on a first-come-first-serve basis. Students must have completed 24 UNC credits with a minimum GPA of 205.
Students will live on campus at Bogazici University in the Superdorm. The Superdorm offers 2, 3, or 4-bedroom suites. It features daily cleaning services, free internet access, laundry, cafeteria, and a beauty shop. Students will be responsible for their own meals. They may eat at on-campus cafeterias or find their own meals in the city. Meal costs are relatively cheap in Turkey.
