The Kazakhstan Institute of Management and Strategic Research (KIMEP) is located in Almaty, Kazakhstan. It is Kazakhstan’s premier institution and the top ranked institution in Central Asia. The above estimated total expenses are used to help plan and prepare for the program, as well as calculate eligibility for financial aid.  Not all students will incur all the expenses above.  Not that the last line is not considered a necessary expense and is not included in the total for financial aid purposes.  All amounts listed are estimates and are subject to change depending on international economic factors, past participant reports, and on-site staff reports.  Student expenditures in-country depends greatly on personal spending habits, post- or during-program travel, and available funds.

Scholarships are available through KIMEP University.


Almaty is located in southeastern Kazakhstan, near the base of the 20,000 foot Tien Shan Mountains and the vast Siberian Steppe. Almaty, one of the largest cities in Kazakhstan is home to several museums, restaurants, and theatres. Opportunities for outdoor activities are numerous with several ski resorts and the world’s largest outdoor ice skating rink located in close proximity. 

Kazakhstan is the world’s 9th largest country. Since it gained independence from the Soviet Union it has experienced rapid change spurred by its developing oil market. It is currently one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Its historical location along the ancient Silk Road and the modern soviet occupation has created a society with a wide variety of cultures, religions, and languages.

KIMEP will organize excursions to historical sites and natural wonders including Charyn Canyon - the Grand Canyon of Central Asia, Turkestan - once a stopping place on the Great Silk Road, and the beautiful mountains surrounding Almaty.  


Classes are available in business administration, law, economics, international affairs, public administration, and journalism.

Language of Instruction



This program is open to all majors with no limit on the number of UNC students who can participate. To be eligible to apply students must have at least a 2.5 GPA and have completed at least two semesters of courses at UNC.


Students will live in an on-campus dorm. The dorm includes laundry and maid service. Students have a variety of on-campus meal options including a cafeteria located inside the dorm.

Students must first complete the UNC study abroad application and the KIMEP Summer School Application and return to their Study Abroad Advisor. Students meeting the minimum requirements will be selected to participate. If accepted, students will be required to complete an additional application, a copy of their passport, and an official copy of their transcript.


Students will need to apply for a student visa. The International Office at KIMEP will send an invitation letter. Applications can be downloaded online and sent to the Kazakh Embassy in Washington D.C. along with supporting documents. Click here for more information about visas
