The Université Laval is located in Québec City, Canada. Laval is the oldest center for education in Canada and is the first French Language speaking university established in the new world. It is one of Canada’s most prestigious research institutions in Canada. It hosts more than 400 academic programs and has a student population of 37,000 with more than 2,500 international students.

It also is home to the largest sports complex in Canada. It has over 30 buildings all linked by underground tunnels, allowing students to avoid inclement weather. The students union includes a pub, restaurants, cafeteria, hair salon, bookstore, and more.

Université Laval’s intensive French language immersion programme is a 5-week, 6-credit programme follows the Summer Business University and offers students the opportunity to learn or reinforce their French in one of the most beautiful cities in North America: Quebec City.

 

Summer Business University: 6 credits

Summer Semester: June 8 - July 5

The Summer Business University is an intensive 6-credit business program that focuses on international trade in the context of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). It is composed of in-class lectures and presentations, company visits and cultural immersion. Following the first week, students spend a weekend in the majestic Saguenay region, 2 hours north of Quebec City, in a natural and rustic setting. There, they participate in many team activities and learn more about each other’s culture. There is also an optional weekend proposed in Montreal.


Costs


Students will pay tuition and fees to UNC. They will pay all other expenses in Canada. The budget given in US dollars is an estimate and is subject to change dependent on exchange rates.

Location


Québec City is a European- style city on the banks of the St. Lawrence Seaway. It has been named a UNESCO World Heritage site and is listed as one of North America’s top ten tourist destinations. The city caters to all interests with museums, art galleries, theatres, and sports venues. Its location near lakes, forests, and mountains provides the outdoors enthusiast with numerous opportunities. This is the prime location to explore the development of French culture in North America.

Activities


The Universite of Laval will arrange a variety of campus activities as well as excursions within the area. Organized activities will be arranged on an almost daily basis.

Courses


Students will participate in a five week intensive French language program and/or Business program. They will receive 6 credits. The French language program offers courses at the introductory, intermediate, and advanced level.

Language of Instruction


English for Business Program and French for Language Program

Eligibility


Business Program: To be eligible to apply students must have at least a 2.8 GPA and must have completed at least 30 UNC credist hours as a business major.

Language Program: To be eligible to apply students must have at least a 2.5 GPA and must have completed at least one semester of courses at UNC.

Availability


This program is open to all majors with no limit on the number of UNC students who can participate each semester. Students may apply for one semester or one academic year.

Housing


Students will live in student dorms on campus and eat inexpensively at campus cafeterias. Rooms come equipped with kitchens and bathrooms.

Application


Students must first complete the UNC study abroad application. Applications will be evaluated and selections will be made immediately after the application deadline. If selected, the student will need to complete an admissions application for the Université Laval.

Visa


U.S. students do not have to apply for a visa in advance.
