Korea University is widely acknowledged as one of South Korea’s oldest, largest, and top-ranked universities. The Sejong campus is located in the center of Korea in Jochiwon. The university aims to become one of the top 100 universities in the world and is aggressively pursuing a strategy of internationalization. The Sejong campus will become an international town where students from all over the world will study, interact, and enhance global understanding of language and cultures. Costs

Students will pay their regular tuition and fees to UNC. Korea University is offering financial assistance to eligible students to help finance airfare and living expenses while in Korea (valued at approx $3000). To be eligible, students must have 3.0 GPA or above at the time of application and acceptance. Students must agree to live with Korean roommates, take 6 credits of Korean Language and Culture, and participate in activities organized by Korea University including field trips, English clinics for KU students, conversation sessions with KU students for at least 1 hour per day, and international club meetings.

Location

Jochiwon, Korea is home to Korea University Sejong campus. This central Korean town is only a short distance from Seoul, the heart beat of the Korean economy. Students can reach Seoul by train or car in approximately 90 minutes. Other large cities located near Korea University are Daejon, Chunan, and Chungjoo accessible by a quick 30 minute drive.

In Jochiwon, there are many restaurants, bars, cafes, karaoke, convenience stores, bookshops, stationery stores, supermarkets, beauty shops, internet cafes, studio-flats, opticians, pharmacies and so on. If you venture out of the university area, there are many other places to go to in Seoul and beyond.

Public transportation in and around Jochiwon is plentiful and easily accessible. A free shuttle bus runs from campus to the train station every 20 minutes. The nearest train station is Jochiwon Station, where you take trains to the north (Sanghaengsun) and to the south (Hahaengsun) part of the country. There are two kinds of trains in Jochiwon. The first is Saemaul Express which boasts comfortable interior spaces, a variety of services, and superior operating capabilities. The second Mugunghwa-ho, which provides standard train services.

Activities

Students will find a number of activities outside the classroom. First, a group of activities are reserved for ITS program participants only. In addition, a wide variety of exciting extra-curricular activities are available in the areas of music, dance, performance, sports, religion, etc. Students are encouraged to join and enjoy those activities relevant to their personal interest.

UNC students are matched up with a KU student for mutual mentoring. Every UNC student is to develop and lead a club with a group of KU students of an academic, athletic, or aesthetic interest. UNC students will also participate in KU's English clinic where they will help students practice English writing and speaking.

Courses

Students will participate in the ITS program. You will be required to take one course in Korean Language as well as one course in Korean Culture. These courses will transfer back as FL 195 (LC7) and LC8 respectively.

Students can select their remaining classes from a wide selection of courses offered in English including courses in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Sports and Exercise Science, Business, Economics, Political Science, English, Sociology, and Anthropology.

Eligibility and Availability

This program is open to all majors. Four to five available spots are open to UNC students each semester. Students may apply for one semester or one academic year. To be eligible, students must have 3.0 GPA or above at the time of application and acceptance and completed two semesters of study before departure.

Housing and Meals

Students will live in dorms shared with two Korean roommates. The dorms include recreation and laundry facilities, as well as a cafeteria. Two meals a day will be provided in the dorms. Each room is equipped with super high speed internet, free of charge.

Application

Students must first complete the UNC study abroad application. Applications will be evaluated and selections will be made immediately after the application deadline. Students will be notified if they have been selected for exchange or study abroad. Students meeting the minimum requirements will be selected to participate. If selected, the student will need to complete an additional admissions application for Korea University.

Visa

Students who study in Korea are required to obtain a D-2 student visa before departure. In order to apply for the visa, you will need the "Certificate of Admission" issued by KU. If you enter Korea with a tourist visa, you will be asked to leave and re-enter Korea with an appropriate visa (at your own expense). It is recommended you visit the Korean embassy website and contact the consular directly to verify fees and the process for the visa application.
