Location


Almaty is located in southeastern Kazakhstan, near the base of the 20,000 foot Tien Shan Mountains and the vast Siberian Steppe. Almaty, one of the largest cities in Kazakhstan is home to several museums, restaurants, and theatres. Opportunities for outdoor activities are numerous with several ski resorts and the world’s largest outdoor ice skating rink located in close proximity.

Kazakhstan is the world’s 9th largest country. Since it gained independence from the Soviet Union it has experienced rapid change spurred by its developing oil market. It is currently one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Its historical location along the ancient Silk Road and the modern soviet occupation has created a society with a wide variety of cultures, religions, and languages.

Activities


KIMEP is home to several clubs and organizations including Students in Free Enterprise, which also has a club on the UNC campus. KIMEP offers exercise facilities and several sporting opportunities, including American Football. The KIMEP International Student Association helps international students adjust to life in Kazakhstan while organizing several events and activities for international students. Courses


All students can receive transfer credit toward Liberal Arts Core courses and university electives. Students majoring in Business*, Economics, Journalism, Communication Studies, Political Science, and International Studies will find course work transferable to their majors.

Language of Instruction


English

Eligibility


To be eligible to apply students must have at least a 3.0 GPA and have completed at least one semester of courses at UNC.

Availability


This program is open to all majors with no limit on the number of UNC students who can participate each semester. Students may apply for one semester or one academic year.

Housing


Students will live in an on-campus dorm. The dorm includes laundry and maid service. Students have a variety of on-campus meal options including a cafeteria located inside the dorm.

Application


Students must first complete the UNC study abroad application. Applications will be evaluated on a rolling basis. Students meeting the minimum requirements will be selected to participate. If selected, the student will need to complete an admissions application for KIMEP.

Visa


Students will need to apply for a student visa. The International Office at KIMEP will send an invitation letter. Applications can be downloaded online and sent to the Kazakh Embassy in
Washington D.C. along with supporting documents.

students will be required to provide a chest X-ray and HIV/AIDS certificate not older than one year, which can be obtained in Almaty for $18.
