Housing and Meals

Students have two housing options when attending SNU.

  • On-Campus Housing is provided by the Qi Xia Yuan Hotel: The international students hotel is located on campus. Prices are based on single or double occupancy and includes a private bathroom, 24 hour hot water, television, air conditioning, internet access, bed, closet, and desk. Public facilities include a business center, elevator, café and bar, shared kitchen and washing machines. Prices are based on duration of stay and how many occupants live in one room (2 maximum). Costs listed above are based on a five-month semester.
    • 40 CNY/day for double room with roommate, or 80 CNY/day for double room by yourself
  • Off-Campus Housing: plenty of local apartments are available for rent (students are on their own in finding off-campus housing). Prices vary depending on the location and desirability of the apartment. In most cases, to rent an apartment in China you are required to pay the entire contract amount up front upon moving in. (example: 6 month contract at 1200 CNY/Month= 1200 x 6 + 2000 (deposit) = 9200 CNY upfront cost) When renting an apartment, make sure to ask what the rent includes. Utilities are typically extra and vary in price.
    • Approximately 1300 CNY/Month
    • Utilities and Internet approximately 500CNY/Month

Meals are inexpensive in Xi’an. You can eat comfortably on less than $5.00 USD a day. However, many students enjoy spending time at the western cafes located near the campus. Meals at these cafes can run upwards of $10.00 USD per meal. Budget according to your preference. SNU suggests budgeting 500 CNY (approx. 80 USD) per month for meals, adjust your budget according to your preferences.

Students must first complete the UNC application for exchange. Applications will be evaluated and selections will be made immediately after the application deadline. If selected, the student will need to complete an additional admissions application for Shaanxi Normal.

Students attending SNU will apply for one of two visa options “Business (F) Visa” or “Student (X) Visa.” Please visit the link below to choose the appropriate visa type. Applicants must appear in person or hire a visa company to obtain your Chinese visa. Once you arrive in China, the SNU international student office (ISO) will prepare paperwork for you to obtain your resident permit before your first visa expires. Secondly, you will be required to complete a health examination before a resident permit is issued. This health examination is done in China and directions will be given to you by the ISO. The cost for the health examination is approximately 300 RMB. Thirdly, you are required to go to the local police station of your residence (check with ISO or your landlord to find out where it is located) to show proof of your residence for on-campus housing or the apartment you rented. Lastly, when all of these steps are complete you will go to the visa office to apply for a resident permit at the visa office. Note: the visa office will keep your passport for up to a week or longer to complete the process, this is normal.
