The goal of this course is to engage in an in-depth review of how the interactions between person and society impact upon individual and community functioning.  Emphasis will be placed on experiential learning and resources and competencies of students in the class. Research will be explored on the ways in which individuals interact with other individuals, social groups, institutions, communities, the larger culture, and environment.  A specific focus will be the effects of various social issues on individual and community well-being. 

Students will explore Community Psychology in the field in London, England with UNC professor, Dr. Nancy Karlin. Students will spend two weeks in London and will stay in central London accommodations. The program will include guided tours of the British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, Freud Museum, Natural History Museum, National Gallery, St. Paul's Cathedral, Houses of Parliament, Tower of London, Churchill War Rooms, Tate modern, Jack the Ripper's London, and other excursions around the city.

Students will also take full-day excursions to Stratford-Upon-Avon, Hampton Court palace, Windsor, Stonehenge and Salisbury. Students will attend a performance at Shakespeare's Globe theater, and have a few dinners together in city restaurants.

*Students who withdraw after this date will be responsible for the full program costs & tuition and will not be refunded for deposits already made.


The estimated total cost for the program is $4,800 - $5,300 which includes tuition, accommodations, all excursions, field trips, meals, international airfare, in-country transportation, health insurance, and personal funds. Final cost will be dependent on enrollment numbers.

This program is open to all UNC students who have completed a minimum of 24 credit hours by the time of departure with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.


Applications will be considered on a first-come-first-serve basis. Deadline Passed.

Students will be sent a link to register with AIFS (program provider) and will be required to pay a $50 non-refundable application fee at the time of application and a program deposit of $450 by February 21, 2014.
