Please note:
- It is important to plan ahead when you search for financial aid. Most financial aid application deadlines are December for the following fall semester
- International graduate students may be eligible for financial assistance through their specific departments
- US Federal Financial Aid is generally available for US citizens and “eligible non-citizens.” Eligible non-citizens may be
- US permanent residents (green card holders)
- Conditional permanent residents
- Non-citizens with an I-94 showing “Refugee,” “Asylum Granted,” “Indefinite Parole,” “Humanitarian parole,” or “Cuban-Haitian Entrant”

UNC International Undergraduate and Transfer Scholarship
This award developed as part of the University’s Non-resident Undergraduate and Transfer Awards, and is intended for international students new to UNC. Recipients are selected on their merit and the awards are renewable to students maintaining good academic standing. Duration of this award will be the time required for the recipient to complete his / her undergraduate studies, a maximum of eight semesters.
- Applicant must be applying as a new undergraduate and attending Northern Colorado for the first time
- Applicant must apply for admission and be accepted as a degree-seeking, tuition-paying student
- Applicant must complete the International Scholarship Application
- Applicant must submit a TOEFL score of 520 pbt, 190 cbt, or 70, ibt or another approved assessment of English Language Proficiency
- Applicant’s gpa must be a minimum 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, based on grades through fall semester before enrollment
- Recipients shall be selected by the International Scholarship Committee
- One of the three awards available yearly must go to a Taiwanese applicant if there is one
- Not eligible: exchange students, government / employer sponsored students, students in special short-term non-degree programs, IELP students
- Deadline for submission will be April 1 for the following academic year
- 50% of each year’s award will be applied to the recipient’s UNC bill fall semester and 50% to the spring semester bill

Allen & Lily Huang Global Citizenship Scholarship
This award is given in the name of UNC’s long-time Provost and supporter of international education, Dr. Allen Huang, and his wife, Lily. It is awarded at the International Awards Ceremony in spring semester each year and applied to the recipient’s tuition costs the following fall. The amount of the award will vary according to the endowment’s earnings. Nominations will be sought and instructions given the end of fall semester with a deadline of February 1. This award is not renewable. The recipient must submit to CIE a thank you letter to Drs. Allen and Lily Huang before funds can be released.
The award is presented to a continuing international graduate or undergraduate student who has shown exceptional leadership in promoting understanding between cultures as well as exceptional academic achievement while at UNC. The applicant shall submit to the Scholarship Committee at the Center for International Education:
- His / her current academic transcript
- One letter of recommendation regarding leadership and campus involvement
- One letter of recommendation regarding academic achievement
- An essay of 500 words maximum on “How studying abroad has modified my worldview and my cross-cultural communication strategies”

Chinese Opportunity Scholarship
this award was established to increase cultural understanding between the US and China, and to assist China in its economic development.
- Applicant must be a citizen of the Peoples Republic of China
- Applicant must study business
- Applicant must complete the International Scholarship Application
- Preference will be given to female candidates
- The amount of the award will vary according to the endowment’s current earnings
- This award is for one year but may be renewed for an applicant maintaining a 2.0 UNC cumulative gpa and a 2.0 Business gpa.
- This recipient shall be selected by the International Scholarship Committee
- The award will be applied to the student’s UNC bill either fall semester or fall and spring semesters
- The recipient must submit to CIE a thank you letter to “Donors” before funds can be released.

Dr. Jongrak Krainem Scholarship
This award honors Dr. Jongrak Krainam who, after graduation from UNC became a leader in education in Thailand through her association with Kasetsart University in Bangkok.
- Applicant may be studying at either graduate or undergraduate level
- Applicant shall be a full-time international student from Thailand
- Applicant must complete the International Scholarship Application
- This recipient shall be selected by the International Scholarship Committee
- This award may be renewed one time for one year
- The amount of the award will vary according to the endowment’s current earnings
- The award will be applied to the student’s UNC bill either fall semester or fall and spring semesters
- The recipient must submit to CIE a thank you letter to Dr. Krainam before funds can be released.

Anna C. Petteys Scholarship
This award honors Anna C. Petteys who, after graduation from UNC in 1943 became a lecturer, politician, newspaper woman and world traveler and promoter of global Education. She was active in the United Nations and a friend of Madame Chiang-Kai-Shek.
- Applicant may be studying at either graduate or undergraduate level
- Applicant must show a cumulative gpa of no less than 3.0
- Applicant must complete the International Scholarship Application
- Applicant must show financial need
- This recipient shall be selected by the International Scholarship Committee
- The amount of the award will vary according to the endowment’s earnings
- The award will be applied to the student’s UNC bill either fall semester or fall and spring semesters
- The recipient must submit to CIE a thank you letter to “Donors” before funds can be released.

Taiwan Faculty Exchange Scholarship
This award was established in 1997 to assist faculty at Taiwan’s Teachers’ Colleges and Normal Universities in studying for the final degree in their academic field.
- Applicant must be teaching faculty at one of UNC’s sister universities in Taiwan or at National Taiwan Normal University the year s/he applies
- Applicant must study for terminal degree in his / her field or for post doctorate
- Applicant must be nominated by letter from the president of his / her university to the Dean of the Graduate School at UNC by December 15 of the year prior to enrollment
- Applicant must submit GRE scores from exam taken no later than November of the year prior to enrollment
- Applicant must submit a minimum TOEFL score of 550 pbt, 213 cbt or 80 ibt
- Applicant must be admitted to the graduate school at UNC by April 1.
- Award will be $13,500 each year for two years for Master’s study or three years for Doctoral study
- 50% of each year’s award will be applied to the recipient’s UNC bill fall semester and 50% to the spring semester bill

Graduate School Diversity Scholarship
This award is intended for students from groups under-represented at UNC in disciplines and degree levels that will be identified from time to time. Factors considered are race and ethnicity, gender, disability, and national origin.
- Applicants must be fully admitted to a graduate degree program and must be classified as graduate students at UNC
- Applicants must be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours each semester
- These funds may be used only to pay tuition; if the recipient drops courses any excess tuition must be repaid to the Graduate School
- The amount of the award is contingent upon the recipient’s level and number of credit hours that semester
- This award is contingent upon State of Colorado funding
- Receiving this award may necessitate an adjustment to other financial aid you receive as a student at UNC. It is the recipient’s responsibility to verify the impact of this award on other financial aid.
This award will be applied to the recipient’s UNC bill. Any funds available after the payment of fees will be deposited in the student’s account at Wells Fargo Bank |

Intensive English Bridge Scholarship
The purpose of this scholarship is to facilitate the successful completion of the Intensive English Language Program for students who are ready to “bridge” into full-time study for a UNC degree. This is a one-time award of up to $2,400 that will be applied only to Intensive English tuition, to a maximum of 8 credits. No more than five (5) awards may be given in any academic year. Deadline for applications is the end of week four (4) of each semester.
- Applicants must take the Academic English Assessment at the Center for International Education
- Applicants must place in the highest level of the Intensive English Program (Level 6 or 7) on this assessment
- Applicants must be enrolled in at least one course toward an academic degree the semester the award is received, but need not be enrolled full-time or in a declared major
- This award is made for one semester only
- Applicants must demonstrate financial need
- Applicants must complete and submit the international student application to UNC, found at this link: http://www.unco.edu/grad/international/admissions/index.html
- Applicant must complete the International Scholarship Application INCLUDING THE FINAL PAGE. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION ARE NOT REQUIRED
- This award will be applied to each recipient’s Intensive English Language Program bill
