SEVIS Fee Procedures
For First-Time International Students
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) charges a fee of $100 for students to use the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). Before you apply for your first F-1 or J-1 visa for en tr y to the United States , you must pay this fee by postal mail, on-line internet, or by Western Union .
NOTE: UNC WILL REIMBURSE YOU FOR THIS FEE WHEN YOU MATRICULATE.
The procedure for all three methods is:
1. Obtain the fee payment Form, I-901.
* Access Form I-901 at www.fmjfee.com on the internet, or
* Use the Form I-901 that we have included with your I-20.
2. Complete Form I-901, answering all questions .
* You must have a Form I-20 in order to complete the I-901.
* Our School Code is DEN214F00137000.
3. Pay the $100 SEVIS fee .
Choose the method of payment:
i)By credit card – STRONGLY RECOMMENDED (in US dollars)
a) Follow the on-line ins tr uctions.
b) Print out the payment screen to verify your payment.
c) Take the payment verification printout with you to your visa application interview.
ii) By Western Union – STRONGLY RECOMMENDED (US dollars or your currency)
Go online to http://www.ice.gov/graphics/sevis/i901/wu_fm_inter.htm
Read and follow the ins tr uctions for payment
Print the ins tr uctions and the sample of the completed Western Union form, also on the website
Take these to your Western Union Agent so he can correctly process your payment . ( You may make payment in your home currency .)
The Western Union Agent will give you a receipt immediately.
Take this receipt with you to your visa application interview.
iii.) By personal check , money order, or foreign draft drawn on a US bank (in US dollars) You must print your name on the check and the words:
I-901 Student/Exchange Visitor Processing Fee.
* Mail to: I-901 Student/Exchange Visitor Processing Fee
P.O. Box 970020
St. Louis , MO 63197-0020 .
*You will receive a receipt by mail at the address you give on the Form I-901.
* Take the receipt with you to your visa application interview.
4. All receipts must be received (by mail) or confirmed (by internet) at least three US government working days before your visa application interview.
NOTE: Keep the Receipt of Payment. You will need it for later proof of payment.
Citizens of Canada only:
1. No visa or visa application is required of Canadian citizens.
2. Pay the SEVIS fee as in # 3 above and get the receipt.
3. Present the SEVIS fee payment receipt at a US Port of Entry.
Citizens of China or India (or other citizens making visa applications in China or India ):
1. A “Pilot Project” exists for paying the SEVIS fee for visa applications made in China or India .
2. The SEVIS fee may be paid at the US Consulate at the time of the visa application.
