Sci 265 Computer Homework Instructions

You will use the computers in the Computer Learning Laboratory in Michener L08 to complete the computer homework assignments. Be sure you complete all the lessons listed below, as the number of lessons completed is recorded by the computer.

The hours of the computer lab are:
8-10 M-Th,  8-12 F,  Closed on Sat,  12-5 Sun

You may begin at any time and work at times convenient for you, but you must complete the lessons by the last day of class. Try to complete the computer lessons along with related course material, since they will help you do well on the hour exams.

Signon Procedure:

1. Double-click on the icon "CompChem", which has a picture that looks like colored blocks.

2. The first time you sign on, select "Guest." When you are asked to select a course, select "sci265" then scroll to the bottom of the menu. Select "Register for This Course" and enter your last name, comma, followed by your first initial; e.g., Molly Brown would enter "brown, m" (without the quotes). Then sign off and sign on again with your name as you entered it, in order to receive credit for your work. You will be asked for a password. We recommend that all students use "chem," something that you can easily remember. There is no way someone can mess up your account. They could only earn points for you! Type your password and press the Enter key. The first time you do this the computer will ask that you type it again to make sure it is right.

3. When the lesson menu appears, choose the lesson you want to work on. You need to work all parts of each lesson to get credit, but you do not need to do them in any particular order. The computer will keep track of the ones you complete. An asterisk (*) next to a lesson name means that lesson has been completed. The number of lessons completed will be recorded.

4. Be sure to take notes on what you are learning, as the notes will help you prepare for exams. You will need a calculator for some of the lessons.

6. When finished, to make sure your data is recorded, click on "signoff" at the bottom of the menu screen and then on the "exit" button. If you turn off or reboot the machine while you are still signed on, you may have trouble signing on again. If this happens to you, report the problem to the room proctor or contact Dr. Jones.

TIPS on getting the most out of the lessons: Bring your calculator and take notes to study from later. To check on your understanding, don't just guess, but make a sincere effort to solve each problem. However, feel free to explore what happens if you do pick a wrong answer, as only the fact that you have completed the lesson is recorded. In lessons with unknowns, you can repeat missed unknowns with no penalty. However, unknowns and review questions must be completed correctly before you can receive credit for the lesson.
