The Center for Human Enrichment/Student Support Services program is a part of the national family of TRIO programs. TRIO is a federally-funded college opportunity outreached programs that supports students from underrepresented backgrounds in the pursuit of a college degree. TRIO programs serve over 850,000 students from across the nation annually. For further information refer to the TRIO programs web site.

The Center for Human Enrichment (CHE) has been funded through a Student Support Services grant since 1972. The CHE/SSS grant brings in over 1.75 million dollars to the University of Northern Colorado to support the academic achievement of first-generation college students.  Currently the CHE/SSS program at UNC is recognized as being in the top 1% of programs in the nation.

The focus of the CHE program is on facilitating the successful academic progress and graduation of first-generation college students. The program is comprised of five interconnected and innovative components: curriculum and instruction, academic advising, tutoring, educational technology, and research and assessment. Students who choose to participate in the CHE program are served from the time they enter the program until they graduate from UNC. CHE serves 200 students every year, 60-65 students of which are first-year students. All CHE students are first-generation college students and 2/3 also meet federal low-income guidelines.

Participants in the CHE program are active members of the UNC community and perform above their UNC peers on measures of academic achievement. Specifically, statistics from the 2009-2010 academic year, demonstrate that:

  • 85% of CHE students persist from year to year
  • 88% of CHE participants are in good academic standing
  • 60% of CHE participants graduate from UNC
  • 43% of CHE participants have a GPA of over a 3.0
  • CHE participants were active in student senate, traditional and non-traditional sororities and fraternities, UNC athletics, theatre, student activities, and a variety of other clubs and organizations

The Center for Human Enrichment Student Support Services program is funded through a TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education and receives matching support from the University of Northern Colorado. PR/Award Number PO42A060794. For 2010-2011 $461,865 (100%) total funds; $291,522 Federal funding and $170,343 institutional matching funds.
