May 6, 2014
Presented by:
Michael Weddington, Graduate Assistant CETL, Julie Tacker, HR Assistant Director
Candelaria 1375
11:30am - 1:00pm

You have probably already worked in a place where there was a person or many who you just didn’t understand, or who you felt uneasy around for some reason. It happens to pretty much everybody at some point. It’s the newcomer with the big ideas from the other department; the manager who starts changing the entire program; the youngster or old-timer who doesn’t seem to have a clue; the new arrival who looks and behaves in a threatening way. If you’ve ever been in this kind of situation, or just want to be better prepared when it happens to you, please join us in order to learn some practical ways to make life more productive and enjoyable at work!
At the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

1. Hear and share some stories regarding the challenges of working with others who just rub you the wrong way. 2. Learn from the literature and experts reasons why we might typically feel uneasy around certain individuals at work.
3. Learn strategies for how to establish positive working relations with those different than yourself.
4. Discover how those workers you usually try to avoid may hold the key to your own professional and personal growth.
5. Understand how you yourself may be the source of a co-worker’s discomfort, and how you can positively address the situation.
6. Understand what your options are in dealing with a particularly challenging co-worker or situation, as discussed by a professional from UNC Human Resource Services.

How to Play Together in the Multi-Generational Sandbox
July 22, 2014
Presented by:
Michael Weddington, CETL Graduate Assistant
Candelaria 1375
3:00 - 4:30pm

Ever feel like you just don’t “get” younger or older people in your department or in the community at-large? Do you sometimes feel like younger or older people simply think and speak a different language than yourself? Do you worry that younger or older generations around you simply don’t value or appreciate the ‘right’ things? Do you wish that you could better understand your students, co-workers, or managers? Drawing upon copious research findings, this forum will address such questions and concerns. Higher educational settings such as ours are especially attuned to the promise and challenges associated with diversity. Particularly when linked to such categories as gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, physical ableism, and nationality. However, one under-appreciated dimension of diversity is generational membership and difference.
At the end of this forum participants will be able to:

1. Better understand how generational differences do exist with respect to general worldviews, communication and socialization patterns, and how these differences can actually be utilized to create more productive and enlivening workplaces.
2. Learn from the literature and experts how we can improve our appreciation of and communications with members of different generations.
3. Learn ways to apply findings from the literature to better serve students of different ages.
4. Better understand how generational differences matter within multicultural contexts.
