SoTL Faculty Forum 1: Teaching as a Form of Scholarship: Designing/Conducting Research on Teaching or Learning
During this faculty forum we will explore how to get started in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL).  Faculty that are interested in discovering the steps involved in addressing practical questions about how to best teach specific subject matter and promote effective learning that is grounded in discipline-based outcomes should come and participate.  We will discuss how to convert an innovative teaching strategy into a research project worthy of publication.
Participants will develop:

  • An understanding of the SoTL projects that promote excellence in both scholarship and teaching
  • An understanding of how to design a research project to evaluate an innovative teaching strategy
  • An understanding of the resources available to help them conduct, complete, and publish their SoTL projects.

Teaching and Learning Fair 2014

Come and celebrate student achievement and faculty excellence using best teaching and learning practices. Open to all! During lunch, the inaugural Teaching and Learning Faculty Fellows will lead and invite participation in a collegial discussion, “Can We Talk… about Teaching and Learning?”

SoTL Faculty Forum 2: The Mechanics of Conducting SoTL Research Projects
During this faculty forum we will explore some of the key steps in conducting research projects in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL).  Topics introduced will be 1) how to prepare an IRB, 2) elements of project design to consider, 3) what data to collect and how to analyze them, and 4) how to disseminate the results (i.e. avenues for publication).
Participants will develop:

  • An appreciation for the necessary steps to consider in the research design of SoTL projects
  • An overall understanding of the process of getting IRB approval for studies involving human subjects (such as SoTL projects)
  • An awareness of the possible venues to disseminate the results of these types of scholarly endeavors.

SoTL Faculty Forum 3: Informed Teaching: Using student learning measures and assessment data to shape teaching.
During this faculty forum we will explore various methods of measuring student learning and linking this data to student learning outcomes of assessment plans.  The emphasis of this forum in making how to collect meaningful data that can help shape continued improvement of specific courses and whole programs.  We will discuss how to make informed decisions on how we teach and how we facilitate the learning of our students.  As with other SoTL faculty forums, we will also discuss how to transform this process into projects that can be disseminated to a broader audience via formal presentations and publications.
Participants will have an opportunity to:

  • Share their own methods of measuring student learning and learn of other methods
  • Link student learning outcomes to the collection of meaningful student data
  • Discuss how to use the data to make informed decisions on how to teach or design learning environments that promote student learning.
