CETL is happy to announce that thirty UNC faculty from colleges across campus have committed to form part of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning cohort. Over the fall semester, faculty in the SoTL cohort have learned about how to develop and initiate their own scholarly classroom inquiry, in addition to sharing information, collaborating with colleagues and further focusing on how to improve teaching and student engagement. 

The next series of meeting will reconvene in January 2012. For more information, please contact Deborah Romero.

This meeting will review key stages in a model for conducting classroom inquiry, and we will explore further how these can connect to participants’ teaching and research interests. Our goal is to provide relevant and viable ways to support participants’ conceptualization and development of SoTL in their own particular contexts, with a view to dissemination and participation at local or national levels.

Qualtrics is a web-based survey tool available to all UNC faculty and staff to support survey research and program evaluation. Undergraduate and graduate students may be granted accounts when supervised by faculty or staff for class, research, or work purposes. Qualtrics allows for basic and sophisticated survey development, in a streamlined, easy to learn format. Data can be readily viewed in a variety of formats and presentations, and exported to compatible programs such as SPSS and Excel

Clickers without the Clunk: Hassle-free measurable student engagement

If you teach, then you question. If you question, then you know the challenge of both eliciting and gauging student responses in class.

This 50 minute interactive session, for the questioners and skeptics, will illustrate how faculty can incorporate clickers into their existing instructional activities, with minimum lead work and without requiring students to purchase the equipment.

The Teaching and Learning in College with Multilingual Students luncheon forum offered information and stories about learners of English in the college classroom. The workshop allowed faculty to understand some of the issue multilingual students deal with and how to support students in the classroom.

The SoTL Faculty Cohort, a new initiative sponsored by the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (CETL), offers you with the opportunity to develop classroom inquiry within your own courses, and learn different research methods that investigate various pedagogical methods and issues.
