Supporting Students' Academic Writing and Self-Sufficiency

Academic writing workshop

In this faculty lunch forum, we will discuss strategies for implementing more opportunities for academic writing in courses across the university. In particular, we will talk about how to:

  • Incorporate short writing exercises that can help to generate class discussion
  • Encourage exploration and/or retention of ideas
  • Enable students’ self-sufficiency.

We’ll also talk about how to grade/assess such writing exercises, as well as when and why it can be productive to not grade them – depending on what the purpose of each
exercise is and how it functions within the content and work of a particular course.
