Spring into Summer!
As the Spring semester winds down and the days grow longer, I would like to share some highlights from this past semester and to thank all of you for your continued support and engagement with CETL.
A quick glance at our Faculty Forum webpage shows how busy we all have been. CETL hosted over fourteen forums, which were attended by over 280 faculty, administrators and staff from across campus and academic units. I am especially proud to acknowledge those who were new to CETL’s services and who participated in any of our offerings for the first time this past semester. We hope to be of service and continued support.
The faculty forums have focused on a range of topics all related to the many facets of teaching and learning. Highlights include sessions that focused on innovative approaches and technologies that can be used to support instruction and student learning, understanding the backgrounds and demographics, as well as strategies to engage our diverse student body, both in and beyond the classroom, not to mention more recent sessions on program assessment and research trends and issues. Thank you to all our colleagues and experts from across campus who delivered such informative sessions, which were without doubt occasions for collegial dialogue and reflection.
With the support of Scholar in Residence, Dr. Dianna Gray, CETL also celebrated the third annual Teaching and Learning Fair, as part of Academic Excellence week. We received more submissions this year than previously and as a result included oral presentations, in addition to the traditional poster session. Many of the participants at the fair are also active members in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Cohort, a dynamic and passionate group of faculty committed to systematic inquiry on teaching and learning in their classrooms or online learning environments. To learn more about this initiative or to join next year, please contact Deborah Romero.
Additional highlights this spring semester include the successful three-part workshop, Write Away, a collaboration with the Office of Sponsored Programs and UNC Office of Research, which has brought together interested scholars and writers from across campus in critical discussion and reflection on ways to strengthen and sustain writing for a variety of purposes related to campus and academic life.
Another ongoing and successful initiative has been the Engaged Faculty Institute, which brought together scholars from the different colleges to learn more about the growing importance of community and civic engagement. Working in collaboration with Colorado Campus Compact, CETL offered a series of workshops and professional development initiatives designed to strengthen and develop community engagement, service learning and engaged scholarship.
CETL continues to collaborate with the Instructional Design and Development team on campus and would like to remind you of their excellent support for both online and hybrid courses at UNC, in particular with regards to Blackboard and and Quality Matters certification. They also offer the Teaching Academy for Online Learning over the summer. For more information about any of these opportunities, please contact Sherri Lancton.
For those of you who are around over the summer we continue to offer a range of workshops, including a newly designed Photoshop 101, as well as one on one consults. For more information, please consult our online listings and descriptions or contact us directly.
As always, if you have a specific need or area of interest, either as an individual or group, or if you would simply like to share, CETL can help! Please do contact us either via email, phone or in person! In the meantime, thank you all for making this year such a success and best wishes for a wonderful summer!
