Reviewers
IMPORTANT NOTICE: We attempt to keep your manuscript load
fair and balanced. Although the reviewer job description calls
for 2 manuscripts per month, the actual load will be based on
the number of submissions, the number of reviewers available,
the number of re-submissions, circumstances related to issue
deadlines, and requests for editorial consultation. On occasion,
we will ask you to review additional manuscripts. Thank you!
Whenever you are notified by CES through email regarding the review of a manuscript, you will also receive a link in your email message, which is not listed here, to a private section of the CES Web site that provides Frequently Asked Questions for reviewers regarding the following technical information:
- An overview of the technical process of obtaining manuscripts and evaluation forms.
- Instructions for "downloading" a manuscript file to your computer.
- Instructions for "downloading" and editing the appropriate evaluation form.
- How to send the edited evaluation form to CES.

Reviewer Help
Counselor Education and Supervision utilizes a review process in which manuscripts are screened and forwarded to editorial board members for review. This page describes the processes of copying and saving manuscript files to your computer, downloading the appropriate evaluation form, and how to submit the edited evaluation form to CES.
Manuscript Submission Process: Guidelines for Reviewers
Authors submit manuscripts prepared for blind review and accompanying cover letters as email attachments. CES screens document files so that they meet minimum requirements for blind review. Each manuscript file is given a coded name and copied to a folder on the CES Web site. Each manuscript file is available for "download" and review by designated reviewers, through a specific link in their email, to a restricted location on the CES Web site.
- Step 1: You are contacted by CES by email.
- Step 2: Copy the manuscript file to your computer.
- Step 3: The review process.
- Step 4: Accessing and editing the appropriate evaluation form
- Step 5: Sending CES your evaluation form.
- Reviews of Revised and Resubmitted Manuscripts
- After Reviews are Complete
Step 1: You are Contacted by CES by Email
- When a manuscript falls within your expressed areas of expertise, you and two other reviewers will be contacted by email to review a manuscript.
- The manuscript will be identified as Quantitative, Qualitative, Position Paper, or Innovative Method.
- You are expected to review and evaluate the manuscript within a 30 day time period.
- The review process is not complete until ALL 3 manuscript reviewers submit their evaluations. Please do not delay the review process for an excessive period of time. Authors and the editor sincerely appreciate timely reviews.
Step 2: Copy the Manuscript File to Your Computer
- When you receive email notification of a manuscript for review a manuscript file will be available for "download" from the CES Web site. A link to a Frequently Asked Questions for Reviewers help section is included in your email message from CES.
- The email message that you receive will include a link to the manuscript document for online access.
- By clicking on the link in your email message, your Internet browser will open to an online location.
- You will see a link to the manuscript document file appear in your browser.
- There are two methods for "downloading" or saving the online manuscript document file to your computer:
1. Click on the link to the manuscript document in your browser. A dialog box will appear that allows you to view or save the document file. If you choose to view the file, the document will appear in your word processing application. To save the file to your computer, click on the save option. You may edit the document as you would any document.
2. Or, you can right-click on the link to save the manuscript file to your computer. First, move your mouse over the link, then right-click. A selection box will appear. Select the "Save Target As" or "Save Link As" option from the selection box. Save the document to your computer. Finally, find the manuscript on your computer and open the document by double-clicking on the file.
Step 3: Review Process
- You will not know who the other two reviewers are, nor will you be in communication with them.
- The document you review will be masked for blind review.
- Use the appropriate evaluation forms to provide guidelines for your review of the manuscript.
Step 4: Accessing and Editing the Evaluation Forms
- The email that you receive will also include a link to the appropriate evaluation form.
- The email message from CES includes links to the appropriate evaluation forms, a private section of the CES Web site available only to reviewers. You can access and copy the appropriate evaluation form to your computer. Instructions are provided.
- Once you copy and save the appropriate evaluation form to your computer, you can edit the evaluation form with your word processing application.
- Please try to make your written feedback as specific as possible.
- After you have completed editing the evaluation form, save the document with a new and descriptive name.
- Send the completed evaluation form to CES as an email attachment.
- You can also edit the manuscript. Please make editorial comments clear and specific. Make any “copy edits” in upper case bold font.
Step 5: Sending the Edited Evaluation Form as an Email Attachment
- Send the evaluation forms and edited manuscripts to ces@unco.edu as email attachments. Here are directions for attaching a file to an email message.
- CES sends the evaluation forms and edited manuscripts to the author.
- CES will also send the completed evaluation file to you as feedback.
Reviews of Revised and Resubmitted Manuscripts
Review of revise/resubmit manuscripts follows a similar process:
- You will be contacted again by email to notify you of a manuscript to review.
- The modified manuscript will include the appended suggestions of all of the reviewers and the disposition letter.
- Please determine if necessary changes have been made and review the manuscript using the evaluation form as a guideline to structure your review.
- Follow the same process of resubmitting a new evaluation form (steps 4 & 5).
After Reviews are Complete
After the reviews have been completed and the editor has completed the disposition letter, the author receives from the editor:
- a final disposition letter
- the final 3 evaluation forms from the reviewers with recommendations
- copies of the manuscript with text edits and comments
