How to Apply
All applicants must be in good academic and disciplinary standing at UNC in order to go abroad. Also, you must meet the eligibility requirement of the individual program. You must have a minimum of 24 university-level credits completed by the time you go abroad with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
After meeting with a UNC study abroad peer advisor for a general information session and with a study abroad advisor to discuss your academic and personal goals for study, student teaching, or interning abroad, you can apply to a program. The process varies slightly depending on the type of program: UNC Exchange, ISEP Exchange/Direct enroll, faculty-led or UNC affiliated program.
All UNC students must turn in the following documents to the CIE-Study Abroad & Exchange Office by the application deadline. A completed application will include the following three items:
- General Application Form (You must download the blank application, save it, then fill it in)
- Statement of Purpose Essay (see page 2 of General Application Form for essay prompts)
- Study Abroad Course Planning Worksheet
Most programs will require both the UNC application for authorization and a direct application for admission to the affiliated program provider or host institution. Your study abroad advisor will walk you through the process if you have questions.
Application deadlines range from several weeks to many months before a program begins.
Applicants should plan ahead to ensure that they have sufficient time to fulfill the
application, scholarship, and financial aid process. Please pay close attention to
- September 1: ISEP-Exchange Spring Programs
- September 29: All other Spring Program
- February 15: NSE, ISEP-Exchange Summer and Fall applicants
- March 11: All other Summer, Fall and academic year applicants
Study Abroad/Exchange Administration Fee
All students who participate in a program offered through the Study Abroad & Exchange Office at UNC pay an administrative fee that directly supports the study abroad operation within the Center for International Education at UNC.
The administrative fee is $330 per semester for all semester programs. The fee for ISEP Exchange/Direct-enroll programs is $200. The charge for faculty-led programs, non-credit bearing internships, and international student teaching is $150. The Study Abroad/Exchange Administrative charge is billed to the student's UNC account for each term he/she is abroad.
Students who apply to a study abroad program, then withdraw their application after the deadline, will still be charged a $30 fee through their UNC account. Similarly, if a student applies to a study abroad program and is not accepted, the student will only be charged the $30 nonrefundable portion of the fee. These policies do not apply to faculty-led programs.
