The Division of

Exceptionalities & Bilingual/ESL Education

Director

Barbara G. Rhine

The Division of Special Education increased its scope with Bilingual and ESL education joining the Division. This has resulted in a new name of The Division of Exceptionalities and Bilingual/ESL Education. This addition has increased the diversity of courses and faculty.

Another exciting feature this year has been the addition of an undergraduate major in special education. The program is constructed to give the students a broad background in content areas with a focus on literacy and special education to meet the needs of students with disabilities in a continuum from mild/moderate to profound. Forty-two students selected this program as a major during the first semester.

The College of Education and Behavioral Studies scholar for this year is a member of the Division of
Exceptionalities and Bilingual/ESL Education. Madeline Milian was selected for her outstanding work in research, writing and grant procurement. She also received the University of Northern Colorado Sponsored Programs Award.

The National Center on Low Incidence Disabilities continues to be an outstanding center for research, education, and support across the nation. A successful conference focusing on research for doctoral students from around the nation was held with leading researchers in the low incidence areas as session leaders.
