Director

David M. Gonzalez

The School of Applied Psychology and Counselor Education (PPSY) delivers 3 nationally accredited doctoral programs, one nationally accredited Ed.S. program and 3 nationally accredited masters programs. The division trains the largest number of doctoral students at UNC. Faculty are committed to the training of helping professionals who work in community agencies, schools, and other human service settings. Students are trained to deal with a variety of ages, from infants through adulthood in a diverse range of capacities.

A number of highlights for 2001/2002 are worth noting. For example, PPSY was the recipient of UNC's award for Departmental Excellence in Scholarship for a consistent and outstanding record of publications/presentations by faculty and students. This award exemplifies PPSY faculty members' commitment to scholarly activity as an integral part of teaching and training. Also, many faculty members are members of editorial boards of professional journals. Another proud moment occurred as Dr. Linda Black was selected as one of 2 recipients of the College of Education and Behavioral Studies Teacher of the Year award. Other highlights include Dr. Ellis Copeland's receiving a lifetime achievement award from the Colorado Society of School Psychologists. In addition, Dr. Rik Carl D'Amato was selected as the editor elect of The School Psychology Quarterly, one of the premiere journals in the field of School Psychology. And, Dr. Achilles Bardos was selected to serve as Chair of the Committee on Psychological Testing and Assessment (CPTA) for the American Psychological Association.

Just of small sampling of sixteen faculty publications for the year demonstrate the variety of faculty interests and expertise. Dr. Michelle Athanasiou's published the first national qualitative study on school-based consultation. Dr. Achilles Bardos published on the use of projective techniques with school-aged children while Dr. Rik Carl D'Amato contributed 2 book chapters to the popular Sattler textbook in the area of assessment and brain injuries. Also, Dr. William Walsh published the 2nd edition of his text Essentials of Family Therapy. Dr. Sandy Magnuson published on a variety of topics, including research on the experiences of new assistant professors in counselor education. Dr. Lia Softas and Dr. Tracy Baldo published on an aspect of family psychology.

Faculty and students made 31 presentations at local, regional and national venues on a variety of topics. For example, presentations were done on early childhood, intellectual and cognitive assessment, and brain injuries, social privilege, cultural competencies in supervision, and mentoring. Other presentations included such topics as the prevention of school violence, attachment styles, and diagnostic issues in eating disorders. Also, a division faculty member was involved in a symposium on using technology to deliver education to remote areas.
