Educational Foundations and Curriculum Studies

Department Chair

Michael J. Jacobs

The Department of Educational Foundations & Curriculum Studies (previously the Foundations of Education Department) provides coordination and coursework for teacher preparation programs at the University of Northern Colorado. Our mission and mandate is to prepare professional educators at both the undergraduate and graduate level who are critical thinkers, reflective decision-makers, creative problem solvers, and agents of positive social change, prepared to respond to the continually evolving needs of a diverse population in a pluralistic, democratic society.

The department includes the following academic and programmatic units:
- Educational Foundations
- Curriculum Studies
- Secondary Education
- Middle Grades Education
- K-12 Education
- Rural Educational Access Program (REAP)

The Department of Educational Foundations & Curriculum Studies is in the process of developing a new doctoral program (Doctorate in Educational Studies) for educational practitioners who are interested in advanced graduate study leading to teaching and research in higher education. The program will require a common core of instructional experience focusing on foundational studies in conjunction with the development of research skills, and coursework in a cognate emphasis.
