Caring About Learning:
The Nature and Nurturing of the Subject-Matter
Appreciation
This article discussed
whether or not it is important to keep students encouraged when it comes to
their goals. The issue that is involved doesn't pertain to a students learning
being a difficult task but that learning is something that comes naturally. But
to each and every student learning is different. It is important for teachers
to realize that it is important to reinforce appreciation with a student who is
learning well and to encourage the ones that may struggle.
Learning can become
complicated to an individual if they let it become their measurement of worth.
The article mentioned that it is important for a teacher to know when a student
is taking on this type of mentality. The teacher should then discourage any
negative reasons for learning and avoid the unconstructiveness of failure at
ones expense. The article also mentions that a teacher should also encourage
positive reasons for learning that will help work on their self-improvement and
creativity. Once both of these have been met then an appreciation for subject
matter could possibly increase. Even though some learning can be driven in this
way it is possible that students become successful through a multiple of
stressful events that surround them. The article suggests that stress can drive
a student to learn more so that their grades can take them away from that
possible failure.
Even though there may be many
different learning schemes for students it is most effective if the students
are given a structured set of clearly defined criteria for them to work from
then they have to live up to the quality demanded by the teacher. Another
positive way to increase learning from this article is by letting the students
redo their work. This reinforces what the students should be doing and they are
finally meeting their goals.
The basis of this article was
to provide ways for teachers to keep the students interest in the subject
matter and to not let the student get involved in letting their grades either
define them or diminish their goals.
