Commentary-Covington, Caring about learning
I believe this article stresses how important grades are to students. They think that the grade they receive is representative of how well they learned the material, but in many instances this is not the case. Many students receive good grades, but have not actually taken in any of the material. One problem is that many students only see rewards when they are receiving good grades. The article states that these rewards focus on performance outcomes, not on the process of learning itself. It seems like the better grades students get, the more interested they get in the subject matter they are studying instead of the other way around. People enjoy learning about things that already interest them than subjects that hold little interest. Even if they do not get the best grade, it is very possible that they will still hold interest for the subject. The author says that more is needed than academic success to offset the forces that distract the value of learning. I think that if the students are interested in what they are learning more will soak in. If that happens I think that they will ultimately understand the material and get good grades on assessments.
