News and Notes:
Sandy Magnuson (APCE) received the Lance Huffman Award for Dedication and Advocacy to the school counseling profession in the state of Colorado at the Colorado School Counselor’s Association Annual Conference. This recognition by her peers is richly deserved. Sandy has worked diligently, often behind the scenes, to raise the profile, credibility and accountability of the school counseling profession.
Hanna Schertz (SPED) received a four year $1 M grant. Project title: Promoting Early Social-Communicative Competency in Toddlers with Autism Through a Joint Attention Mediated Learning Model
News from the Teaching with Primary Sources-Colorado Rural Partnership grant:
Our core team for our project is complete - see names and contact information below. We are beginning our development of introductory workshops to be offered in April and May to school districts in northern Colorado and the eastern plains focused on using digitized primary sources from the Library of Congress in instruction. These workshops will include face to face and distance components, and ultimate goals for students are to deepen content knowledge, enhance critical thinking and literacy and build on relationships between librarians and instructional staff.
We also want to work with faculty in several ways: 1) we’ll provide a presentation for your class as “guest lecturers,” 2) we hope to offer a session on teaching with primary sources through CETL in March, and 3) we have opportunities for faculty to serve as subject matter experts on writing teams this summer. These teams will pair K-12 teachers or librarians with UNC faculty to develop K-12 lessons and units that integrate primary sources from the Library of Congress and focus on helping students analyze and think like experts about primary source materials. Our focus is on educators, including pre-service teacher candidates, and our availability to faculty isn’t limited to the PTEP program. Please give us a call if you’re interested in getting involved or getting more information. Look for our website coming in February!

It is luxury to learn; but the luxury of learning
is not to be compared with the luxury of teaching.
