Multilingual Education

UNC’s Master of Arts in Multilingual Education curriculum equips language teachers with the expertise to facilitate language learning in the U.S. and abroad. We welcome international teachers as well as teachers working in the United States. Our programs are offered on-campus, online, and in hybrid formats to meet the needs of our diverse students.

Typically, you will complete our master’s program in four to five semesters with a course load of 6 to 10 credits per semester. If you have prior coursework in applied linguistics and language teacher education, you may qualify for credit transfer and reduction of total required credits.

Immersive Learning Opportunities

Your experiences in our program prepare you for your careers in language education. Our students have opportunities throughout their curriculum program to engage in immersive learning opportunities, whether designing curriculum for local schools or schools in another country, developing language assessments, assisting teachers in schools, tutoring at the university level, or teaching language in community settings. Internships, practica and/or student teaching in language education are available in the United States and other countries around the world such as Spain, China, and Thailand.

Multilingual Education Careers

Our master's program will give you the skills, knowledge, and confidence to develop a successful career in language education. Our students come from around the world and the United States. We anticipate that our graduates will become teachers and administrators in K-12 schools or work for universities and community colleges in the United States and in other countries. Our program will also successfully prepare you for doctoral studies. Learn more about an Educational Doctorate in Educational Studies at UNC.
