Master of Arts (M.A.) Application Process

Application Deadlines:

The HESAL program has established two deadlines for reviewing applications to our Ph.D. and M.A. programs.

Due to a technical glitch we have extended the priority deadline for Fall 2015 HESAL program applicants to February 6, 2015. The second is April 29, 2015.

Note: It takes up to 20 working days for the Graduate School to set up a student record, evaluate eligibility for admission, and prepare a screening packet for our HESAL Selection Committee.

General Admission Requirements

Students must hold a bachelor's degree an accredited college or university and have a grade point average of 3.00 or better (4.00 point scale) on the most recent 60 semester hours.

Checklist of Materials to be Submitted for Admission

All materials should be submitted to the UNC Graduate School:

  • UNC Graduate School Application Form - U.S. citizens may file this form online or may submit a hard copy by mail. International students must submit the International Student Application for Graduate Admission.
  • Non-refundable processing fee
  • Official transcripts of all previous undergraduate and graduate work
  • Vita/resume of professional and academic experiences and accomplishments
  • Statement of goals - Your statement should include your professional goals, and the relationship of those goals to the purposes and opportunities of the M.A. program in Higher Education and Student Affairs Leadership. You are encouraged to carefully review the various materials provided by the HESAL program (the UNC Catalog, the HESAL website, etc.) so that the statement provided is specific to this program.
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation - Recommendations should be from individuals who can address your potential for study at the graduate level and/or your professional experience and potential and should be submitted using the online HESAL Candidate Recommendation form. (link to form)
    • Via the online form you will provide information for 3 recommenders (name and email). The recommenders will automatically receive an email message asking them to complete the letter of recommendation form on your behalf (this is a separate survey).
    • The completed letter of recommendation and recommendation rating form will go straight to the Graduate School and will be electronically matched to your application file.
    • If your recommender misplaces the link, you will just need to complete the form again.
