Distance Opportunities for Interpreter Training Center

Woman communicating using Sign LanguageThe University of Northern Colorado’s Distance Opportunities for Interpreter Training Center (UNC-DO IT Center) offers unique educational opportunities for American Sign Language (ASL) - English Interpreters. Graduates work in community, educational and legal settings to meet the communication needs of deaf and hard of hearing individuals who use American Sign Language as they interface with English speaking people. The preparation of these qualified interpreters is achieved through state-of-the-art learning experiences designed by a team of nationally and internationally renowned experts in the field of ASL-English interpretation. The curricular outcomes are based on defined competencies and standards established by the Conference of Interpreter Trainers, the national organization of interpreter educators. The UNC-DO IT Center is the only national program of its kind that delivers coursework via distance technologies, with interspersed summer sessions.

The Center currently offers a baccalaureate degree program in ASL– English Interpretation and three professional development certifications: a) Educational Interpreting Certificate Program, b) Legal Interpreter Training Program, and c) Diagnostic Assessment and Skills Training Series. A fourth professional development opportunity, the Leadership and Supervision Certificate Program, is projected to begin in 2008. Each program is designed for distance delivery to students throughout the United States. The DO IT Center prepares autonomous, competent ASL-English interpreters who are work- and certification-ready.
