Educational Foundations & Curriculum Studies (EFCS)

Catalog Requirements

The academic and professional purpose that unifies the various approaches to foundations of education and curriculum studies is the development of interpretive, normative and critical perspectives on education. Foundational study within education relies heavily on the resources and methodologies of the humanities and the social and behavioral sciences.

The primary objectives of foundational studies at UNC are to provide experiences and perspectives that allow students to explain and evaluate educational issues, practices and policies in a manner that leads to the development of a reflective practitioner possessing a disciplined sense of professional responsibility.

Secondary Education (STEP)

The Secondary Professional Teacher Education Program (Secondary PTEP) is designed to prepare students to teach at the 7-12 grade levels within one of 14 content areas. As a standards based teacher preparation program, teacher candidates are provided with opportunities to integrate knowledge and skills acquired from general education course work, content area course work, professional education courses, and initial and advanced field experiences at one of eight Partner School sites. The Secondary PTEP has been recognized as a Distinguished Program in Teacher Education by the Association of Teacher Educators (2002).

K-12 Professional Teacher Education

Catalog Requirements

The K-12 Professional Teacher Education Program (K-12 PTEP) provides teacher candidates with opportunities to integrate knowledge and skills acquired from general educational course work, content area course work, professional education courses with extensive field experiences. One mission of the K-12 PTEP is to prepare beginning teachers who have met not only the program outcomes at the proficient or advanced level, but are well grounded in content knowledge within the teacher candidate’s chosen field (Art, Music, Physical Education, Special Education).

EFCS faculty teach Extended Studies/Professional Development courses through UNC’s Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (The Center). They also offer a number of courses online or at satellite campus throughout Colorado. For further information contact The Center.
