Application Requirements
Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Admissions
Criteria
- A Master’s degree from accredited college
or university.
- Current vita or resume which documents professional
experiences in education
- Professional assessment forms from two individuals,
one of whom is qualified to provide a review of your academic
ability,and one of whom may assess your professional ability.

- Detailed statement which
describes your:
- Demonstrated commitment to education
- Contributions to professional education
- Immediate and long-range personal, professional,
and academic goals
- Rationale for pursuing the Ed.D. degree
- Strengths and weaknesses as they apply to
educational leadership
- Documentation of publications of completed research
projects, if available.
- As part of your personal statement, you are
also asked to provide a brief essay in which you identify and
discuss a significant, current educational problem. Describe how
you would attempt o solve the problem identified.
Residency Requirement:
Doctoral students must complete at least two academic semester/summer
terms of study in residence after having been admitted to the doctoral
degree program. A semester/term in residence is defined as registration
for at least 9 hours of graduate credit of on-campus work applicable
to the doctoral degree. Courses numbered 622 (Directed Study) and
797 (Dissertation Proposal) cannot be counted in the 9 or more credit
hours unless a student also completes at least 6 credit hours of
on-campus coursework applicable to the doctoral degree. Departmental
prefix 799 (Doctoral Dissertation) may not be used under any circumstances
to meet the residency requirement
Graduate School Requirements
for Doctoral Admissions:
- UNC Graduate School Application for Admission
– available as a hard copy or on-line at http://www.unco.edu/grad/general/home.htm.
International students must fill out a hard copy application and
provide other documentation (i.e. TOEFL scores)
- Three letters of recommendation (see ELPS Program
Requirements; do not use Graduate School Reference Form)
- Non-refundable processing fee.
- Two official transcripts of all undergraduate
and graduate studies attended since high school
- Official copies of GRE scores (less than five
years old)
Note:The Graduate School, following the guidelines
published by the Educational Testing Service, does not apply a specific
GRE score or GPA cutoff in determining minimal criteria for admission
eligibility to a doctoral program. The Graduate School utilizes
a decision matrix which combines GRE general test scores and GPA
(see UNC Catalog) to determine whether applicants meet Graduate
School requirements. The Graduate School does allow programs to
recommend admission of applicants who do not meet the Graduate School
requirements if factors exist which justify an exception.
