For the University Community

Community Letter

August 15, 2008

Dear University of Northern Colorado community member:

More Americans now turn to the nation’s food banks, soup kitchens and shelters for meals.  Government reports also show that the number of Americans needing food assistance is increasing; the number of Weld County residents requiring help has grown, too.

University of Northern Colorado students from the School of Communication created a plan for a campus-wide food drive/competition to benefit Weld Food Bank in spring 2006.  During the fall 2006  drive, “Cans to Candelaria,” collected $500 and almost 4,000 pounds of food.  During the fall 2007 drive, almost $3,000 and 8,000 pounds of food were collected. In 2008, we collected approximately 28,000 pounds of food in cash and cans. This year we are encouraging participants to donate cash, not just cans. One dollar donated  will be equal to 6 pounds of food.  Registration deadline is Oct. 2, and we encourage you to challenge another similar group.

If your club, organization, residence hall, department, school, college, or any other group on campus has done a food drive in the past, please consider doing your drive during the “Cans to Candelaria” competition.  The Weld Food Bank presents a trophy to be presented to the winning UNC group or organization at the conclusion of the drive on Thursday, Oct . 8.

For more information about deadlines or how you and your UNC colleagues/ peers/ teammates/ club members/etc. can participate, please see our Web Site.  Consider a challenge!  If you have any questions, contact journalism professor Lee Ann Peck at (970) 351-2635 or e-mail her.

Sincerely,

The Cans to Candelaria 2008 planning committee
