Health Awareness Presentations

The UNC Fitness and Wellness program provides the following presentations and activities for your classroom, Residence Hall or special event.  All programs are free and run for approximately one hour unless noted otherwise.  If you can’t find what you are looking for, our staff is able to develop a program to meet your specific needs.  For more information or to request a program, contact Tricia Tort, Assistant Director of Fitness and Wellness, at (970) 351-2068 or tricia.tort@unco.edu, or submit a request through our Service Request Form.

Stress Management

Breathing Techniques –Learn how to reduce stress, increase energy and holistically heal your body in this interactive workshop designed entirely around breathing.  Techniques including deep breathing, one-nostril breathing, whisper breathing, progressive relaxation and the rolling breath will be introduced and practiced.

Relaxation Experimentation – This comprehensive workshop is designed to promote all aspects of relaxation and stress management.  Participants will learn how to recognize and manage the signs and symptoms of stress by using effective breathing techniques, nutrition, exercise, meditation and yoga movements.

Partner Massage – Learn techniques to provide a proper massage to others, so you can reduce muscle strain and stress, soothe your partner and avoid injury.  This interactive workshop is led by a Certified Massage Therapist and promises to give you a “hands on” experience!

Massage for Fabulous Feet (Reflexology) – This presentation will demonstrate how you can add reflexology into your daily life for balance, increased energy and reduced anxiety.  Participants will learn how to use reflex points in the hands, feet and ears, and will be provided with an easy-to-use reference chart.

Onsite Chair Massage – Known as seated massage, this technique involves the use of a specially designed massage chair in which the client sits comfortably.  Seated massage includes bodywork and somatic techniques, such as shiatsu, amma, and Swedish massage, provided to the fully clothed client in a variety of settings.  Provided by a Certified Massage Therapist.  $50.00 per hour.

Nutrition and Weight Management

Nutrition Basics for Health and Wellness – This presentation discusses a wide variety of nutrition information, including: MyPyramid, food groups and nutrients, energy needs, serving sizes, reading food labels and fad diets.

Behavior Modification for Weight Management – This interactive workshop explores the reasons behind what we choose to eat.  Participants will engage in activities to determine their personal eating style and learn how stress, emotions and other people affect eating habits.

Healthy Cooking on a Budget – In this informative seminar, participants will learn how to stretch their dollar to create low-cost, healthy and appealing meals.  Participants will also receive recipes and nutritional resources to make the transition to healthy cooking easy and flavorful.  

Fitness and Exercise

Goal Setting for Fitness – This presentation will discuss what goals are, why goals related to exercise are beneficial, how to set realistic goals and how to safely achieve your fitness goals.  Participants will engage in activities to help them develop and achieve their personal fitness goals. 

Developing Your Workout – This seminar will discuss the American College of Sports medicine recommendations for physical activity and give you a jumpstart to planning an effective weekly workout routine.

At-Home Fitness Remedies – Prefer to get in shape at home or in your Residence Hall?  This workshop is for you!  Led by a Certified Personal Trainer, this presentation will utilize equipment you already own or can purchase for very little money.  Learn new workouts, how to get started, and how to schedule fitness into your busy routine.  

Female Friendly Fitness – This entirely female workshop will dispel myths, teach you gym lingo, new workouts and techniques, and how to use fitness equipment.  Led by a female Certified Personal Trainer.

Targeting the Core – Discover what the core is all about, including the importance of muscular balance, injury prevention and training myths.  This interactive workshop will take you through fun and innovative ways to train your “powerhouse.”  Led by a Certified Personal Trainer.

Interactive Workout – A Campus Recreation Group Fitness Instructor or Personal Trainer can take your class or group through a fun workout, while also providing education.  A variety of workouts are available, including: core and/or lower body training, dance, yoga, kickboxing and more!  Depending on your interests, our staff can come to you or your group can visit the Campus Recreation Center.

Fitness Assessments – Fitness assessments are a great way to determine your fitness level and set fitness goals.  All components of fitness are tested, including body composition, flexibility, strength and endurance.   Fitness assessments can be performed on-site or at the Campus Recreation Center.     

Personal Wellness

Wellness and Self-Care – This interactive discussion will address the importance of self-care, as well as barrier to achieving personal wellness.  Participants also learn how to achieve balance in their lives, as well as how to nurture the six dimensions of wellness: physical health, emotional well-being, intellectual health, spirituality, social health and occupational health.

Going Green - Environmental awareness isn’t just a new trend; it’s a belief that we have the power to truly change the planet through our own efforts.  This seminar will provide economic and inventive information to help you not only save money, but save the planet.

CPR and First Aid Training – This program will demonstrate and provide opportunities to practice life-saving techniques, including CPR, using an AED, responding to emergencies, First Aid and choking.  Participants will not receive a certification for participation in this program.  Depending on interest, this program will run for 1 ½ to 2 hours.  $5.00 per person.

The Healthy UNC Student – Participants will learn about popular myths and perceptions related to student drinking, drug use, sex and more, as well as how those perceptions are developed. Participants will also learn the real statistics on student health behaviors at UNC.  Information provided by the results of the National College Health Assessment.

Showing Our True Colors – By determining your own true colors, you can validate yourself for who you are.  This interactive workshop teaches you how to open lines of communication, reduce conflicts and relate to others in order to bring out the best in yourself and everyone around you.  90 minutes to 2 hours.

Sexual Health

Safer Sex/STDs – This presentation will discuss the major Sexually Transmitted Diseases found on college campuses, including methods of transmission, symptoms and treatment options.  An overview of contraceptive methods is also discussed.

Sex and Values – This program discusses the role of perceptions and values clarification, as they relate to sexual decision-making.  Participants will also learn techniques for negotiation in intimate relationships.
