UNC Rugby was established in 1969, and hosted the national championship in 1982. Since the inception of the club, UNC rugby has been at the forefront of collegiate rugby in Colorado, where it belongs to the Eastern Rockies Rugby Football Union. Within the last ten years UNC rugby has been in the national Division II spotlight and now transitioning into Divison I.
UNC Men's Rugby was the national runner-up in 2003, won the National Championship in 2005, and finished again as the national runner-up in 2006. In 2008/2009 the BEARS earned the 1st seed in the Western Rugby Union Men's DII Regionals, hosted by UNC. For the 2009-2010 season UNC Men's Rugby went undefeated in conference play and played hard against Division I foes Wyoming, CSU, and CU. The team earned the #1 seed in the Western Rugby Union Regional Championships which were played in Baton Rouge, LA. The 2010-2011 season was a very successful season finishing with an overall record of 10 – 4, competing against The University of Colorado, Colorado State University, Mines, University of New Mexico, and several other school across the Nation. The team went undefeated in the Eastern Rockies conference and earned an invite to compete at Nationals.The 2011-2012 season finished 10 - 2. The UNC Men's Rugby team had a Cinderella story of a season for the 2014-2015 school year. During the fall semester, the team was in the process of rebuilding their team and competing against other USA Rugby teams. The spring semester results came as a surprise to everyone, and after winning in Austin, Texas at Regionals for the National Small Collegiate Rugby Organization, our team traveled to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania for Nationals! We came in second losing by seven to Pacific Union for the Championship Title. The Men's Rugby team also earned Most Improved Club of the year at the Club Sports Banquet.
