Your Loans

If you wish to cancel all or part of your Stafford Loan or Perkins Loan, you must notify Financial Aid in writing no later than 14 calendar days from the date of your billing or the first day of classes, whichever is later.

  • Deferments

    Deferments

    Interest does not accrue and payments need not be made during any period of eligibility for deferment. Deferments are not granted in advance. A deferment of repayment is granted to borrowers who file a properly executed and certified request at the START of a period of eligibility. Deferment request forms must be submitted in a timely manner. One of the following deferrals may apply to your loan(s).

    Deferment Condition:

    • At least half-time enrollment as a student
    • Rehabilitation training
    • Graduate fellowship study
    • Eligible internship or residency program
    • Inability to secure full-time employment
    • Economic hardship
    • Forbearance
    • Peace Corps/ACTION program volunteer
    • Full-time volunteer for tax-exempt organization in service comparable to Peace Corps or ACTION
    • U.S. Armed Services
    • Nurse/medical technician providing health care services
    • Employment in Head Start Program
    • Teacher in designated low-income school
    • Teacher of special education, including teachers of infants toddlers, children or youth with disabilities
    • Provider of early intervention services
    • Teacher of mathematics, science, foreign languages, bilingual education or other field of expertise determined by state education agency to have a shortage of qualified teachers
    • Provider or supervisor of provision of services to high-risk children from low income communities and their families

  • Cancellations

    Cancellations

    A percentage of your loan may be canceled if you meet the eligibility requirements. Cancellation request forms must be submitted in a timely manner. Following is a list of cancellations that may apply to your loan(s).

    Cancellation Criteria:

    • Total and permanent disability or death of borrower
    • Full-time employment in a Head Start Program
    • Full-time law enforcement or correction officer
    • Full-time teaching in low-income school eligible for funding under Chapter 1 of the Education Consolidation and Improvement  Act of 1981
    • Full-time special education teacher, including teacher of infants, toddlers, children or youth with disabilities
    • Provider of early intervention services in a public or other nonprofit program under public supervision
    • Full-time teacher of handicapped students in a public or other nonprofit elementary/secondary school
    • Full-time teacher of mathematics, science, foreign languages, bilingual education, or any field of expertise determined by the state education agency to have a shortage of qualified teachers
    • Provider or supervisor of provision of services to high-risk children from low-income communities and their families
    • Nurse or medical technician providing health care services
    • Peace Corps or ACTION volunteer or comparable service
    • Service in U.S. Armed Forces
